Job summary

Prime Metal Buildings & Components is seeking a Tack Up Welder to weld steel structural parts according to drawings, perform MIG welding, and support production in a fast-paced shop environment.

The role requires passing a 1G Limited Weld Test, ability to work with minimal supervision, and a proven track record of meeting deadlines while maintaining safety standards. Team collaboration and adherence to procedures are essential.

Qualifications

  • Must pass a 1G Limited Weld Test.
  • Manufacturing/fabrication shop experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating/procedure manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Weld steel structural parts as specified by drawings or prints.
  • Perform MIG welding process.
  • Select appropriate welding tools based on job requirements.
  • Operate grinders to finish welds.
  • Inspect welds to ensure quality and specifications.
  • Detect and correct weld defects such as porosity or incomplete penetration.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot welding equipment as needed.
  • Follow safety protocols and wear PPE.
  • Collaborate with team to achieve production goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUMMARY

Our Tack Up Welder welds short beads at points specified by layout, welding diagram, or by fitter along overlapping edges of metal parts to hold parts in place for final welding. Performs tasks of fitter helper. May also tack-weld using hand, or gas-shielded arc welding equipment, or spotwelding gun.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Welding steel structural parts as specified per drawing or print.
  • Perform MIG welding process.
  • Select appropriate welding tools and equipment based on the job requirements.
  • Operating grinder to prepare and finish welds.
  • Inspect completed welds to ensure they meet quality standards and specifications.
  • Detect and correct defects in welds, such as porosity or incomplete penetration.
  • Perform maintenance, troubleshoot repairs, and detect flaws in equipment as needed.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Collaborate with other team members to achieve production goals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be able to pass a 1G Limited Weld Test.
  • Prior experience in manufacturing/fabrication shop is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach for extended periods of time.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50lbs regularly and up to 75lbs occasionally with assistance.
  • Frequent use of hands and arms to handle materials, tools, and welding equipment.
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, climb, or work in awkward positions to complete work.
  • Visual acuity to read measurements, shop drawings, and inspect work quality.
  • Exposure to welding fumes, bright light (arc flash), heat, sparks, and airborne particles.
  • Everyday use of PPE including flame-resistant clothing, welding helmet, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and safety-toe boots.
  • Climate conditions vary in production areas from hot in the summer to cold in the winter.
