Job summary

Rolls-Royce Indianapolis is seeking a T56/Helicopters System Safety & Reliability Engineer to ensure safety and reliability of T56 and Helicopters products throughout their life cycle. You will collaborate with Design, System, and Service teams to meet regulatory and customer requirements.

Responsibilities include modeling degradation, evaluating design solutions, and supporting safety analyses (FHA, FMECA, System Safety Assessment). US citizenship or permanent residency is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science or Engineering with 2+ years of statistics and reliability experience.
  • Master’s degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science or Engineering, or JD/PhD.
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status is required.
  • Experience with T56/501 and/or Helicopter engine products is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Understand degradation and failure mechanisms to reduce hazards and model them using deterministic or data-driven methods.
  • Assess design changes and maintenance practices; deploy models at component to fleet levels for safety and reliability.
  • Support Safety & Reliability analyses and documentation (FHA, FMECA, System Safety Assessment).
  • Support FRACAS and event management during development and in-service phases.

Position Summary

As a System Safety & Reliability Engineer, you will ensure that the safety and reliability attributes of our T56 and Helicopters products are understood, and risks are managed to an acceptable level. This role involves the integration of diverse areas of technical knowledge to create and support complex systems operating under highly challenging conditions. In this position you will support our engineering products throughout their life cycle; working with Design, System, and Service Engineers to ensure our products meet company, customer, and regulatory requirements.

What you will be doing:
  • Understanding the product's degradation and failure mechanisms, associated consequences, with the aim to eliminate or reduce product hazards. Develop models that characterize these mechanisms using deterministic or probabilistic/data mining techniques.
  • Assess new and derivative design solutions, product operation and maintenance practices to evaluate the impact on product safety and reliability. Develop and deploy models at component, system, asset, and fleet levels to characterize product safety and reliability. Support the associated part/function classification activities.
  • Support product development and new product introduction phases through Safety & Reliability Engineering analysis and documentation (e.g. FHA, FMECA, System Safety Assessment, etc.).
  • Support the FRACAS or relevant event management system both in development and in-service phases.
Basic Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science or Engineering and 2+ years’ experience in statistics, probability and reliability prediction, OR
  • Master’s degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science or Engineering, OR
  • JD/PhD
  • In order to be considered for this opportunity, you must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
Preferred Requirements:
  • Experience with T56/501 and/or Helicopter engine products
  • Knowledge of Rolls-Royce Safety Management processes and principles
  • Multi-disciplinary collaboration skills, including facilitation and communication at the component, sub-system, and system level
  • 2+ years of product safety engineering experience, software development, or systems safety analysis
  • Application of agile development methods to deliver engineering work products
  • Experience with military qualification and/or FAA certification of airborne systems
  • Familiarity with the one or more of the following standards: ARP4754, ARP4761, MIL-STD-882, MIL-STD-1629, DO-178C, DO-254, AMCOM 385 and IEE 1633-2016
  • Gas turbine engine, propulsion, or electrical control system experience
  • Demonstrated experience with control system design and one or more of the following tools: Fault Tree+, Reliability Workbench, DOORS, Cameo Systems Modeler
  • Knowledge of systems engineering, and robust design tools and techniques coupled with the latest model-centric development approaches
