Job summary

Job description

Systems Software Engineer

The Computing Services central IT department seeks a versatile Systems Software Engineer to design, develop, test, and maintain applications or system programs that support university operations. The role involves working closely with business stakeholders, troubleshooting production issues, and maintaining technical documentation.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test and maintain software applications and system programs to meet business and technical requirements.
  • Develop and maintain complex data integration systems to move data between multiple types of systems and databases.
  • Follow coding standards, security practices, and development procedures.
  • Perform unit, integration, and system testing and support user acceptance testing (UAT).
  • Assist with implementations, upgrades, and patches of existing systems.
  • Gather, analyze, and document functional specifications and requirements.
  • Create technical documentation, system diagrams, and user manuals.
  • Position-Specific Duties:
    • 25% – Data systems and integrations: create and maintain data integration pipelines, develop monitoring processes.
    • 25% – Technical support for CTTEC: configure UI, notifications, workflows; develop reports and dashboards.
    • 20% – System configuration in NextGen eRA: create custom UI attributes, notifications; meet with stakeholders to define requirements.
    • 10% – Maintain legacy modules: create UI attributes, notifications, workflows; upgrade system versions when necessary.
    • 10% – Data visualization and reporting: develop ETL pipelines and custom reports in Snowflake, Informatica, PowerBI.
    • 10% – Research administration help desk: triage tickets, act as technical point person, coordinate solutions.
Qualifications
  • 1–3 years of experience in software development, systems analysis, or application support.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, testing, and maintaining applications or systems.
  • Experience with functional specifications, requirements gathering, and user needs analysis.
  • Hands‑on support for production applications, troubleshooting system issues, and resolving user-reported problems.
  • Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation (system design docs, user guides, SOPs).
  • Familiar with SDLC methodologies (Agile, Scrum, or Waterfall) and version control systems (Gitlab, Github).
  • Programming in C#, JavaScript, Python, or Java; developing web applications with HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
  • Proficient creating efficient SQL queries for relational databases.
  • Experience with cloud-native data management systems (e.g., Informatica, Snowflake) for data warehouse integration.
  • Debugging and optimizing system performance in SaaS environments.
  • Experience with incident tracking software (e.g., ServiceNow) and providing end‑user technical support.
  • Prefer experience in higher education or academic IT environments.
  • Flexibility, excellence, and passion are essential qualities.
Education & Other Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • Successful background check.
  • Ability to maintain composure, meet deadlines, and work under pressure.
  • Good visual acuity and ability to work long periods with a computer monitor.
