Job summary

Zachary Piper Solutions is seeking a Systems Engineer (VDI) to support a defense program delivering secure enterprise desktop solutions. This on‑site role in Newington, VA requires 8+ years of experience in systems engineering with Omnissa Horizon and VMware vSphere, plus strong PowerShell scripting and DISA STIG knowledge.

The candidate will oversee large‑scale VDI environments, manage images and pools, and ensure security compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of systems engineering or related experience.
• Hands‑on experience with Omnissa Horizon and VMware Horizon hosted on VMware vSphere.
• Experience administering Dell Wyse or comparable thin‑client environments and user profile management tools.
• Strong PowerShell scripting skills and automation of routine tasks.
• Knowledge of Group Policy and its impact on virtual desktop environments.
• Familiarity with DISA STIGs and VDI monitoring tools.
• Active TS/SCI Security Clearance and CompTIA Security+ certification.

Responsibilities

• Engineer and maintain enterprise VDI environments using Omnissa Horizon on VMware vSphere.
• Create, update, validate, and deploy VDI master images and desktop pools with pre‑production testing.
• Administer thin‑client devices and user profile management solutions.
• Develop PowerShell scripts to automate recurring tasks.
• Monitor infrastructure performance and conduct root cause analyses.
• Apply DISA STIGs and maintain security configurations.

Job description

Zachary Piper Solutions is seeking a Systems Engineer (VDI) to support a mission‑critical defense program delivering secure enterprise desktop solutions. This position is on‑site in Newington, VA, with less than 10% travel.

The Systems Engineer will oversee the engineering, administration, performance, and security of a large‑scale Virtual Desktop Infrastructure environment. This role combines hands‑on Omnissa Horizon and VMware vSphere expertise with automation, endpoint management, and secure desktop delivery to support critical mission operations.

Responsibilities for the Systems Engineer (VDI) include:

• Engineer and maintain enterprise virtual desktop environments using Omnissa Horizon running on VMware vSphere
• Create, update, validate, and deploy VDI master images and desktop pools, including pre‑production testing of patches and configuration changes
• Administer thin‑client devices, endpoint configurations, and user profile management solutions
• Develop PowerShell scripts to automate recurring tasks and improve operational efficiency
• Monitor infrastructure and desktop performance, troubleshoot complex issues, and conduct root cause analysis
• Apply DISA STIGs and maintain configurations aligned with DoD security requirements
• Partner with systems, networking, cybersecurity, and customer teams to improve reliability and support mission objectives

Required Qualifications for the Systems Engineer (VDI) include:

• Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of systems engineering or related experience
• Hands‑on experience supporting Omnissa Horizon, formerly VMware Horizon, hosted on VMware vSphere
• Experience administering Dell Wyse or comparable thin‑client environments and user profile management tools
• Strong PowerShell scripting skills and experience automating systems administration tasks
• Knowledge of Group Policy configuration and its impact on virtual desktop environments
• Familiarity with DISA STIG implementation and VDI monitoring and performance management tools
• Current CompTIA Security+ certification
• Must have an Active TS/SCI Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications for the Systems Engineer (VDI) include:

• Experience administering and troubleshooting FSLogix
• Familiarity with Dell Wyse Management Suite
• Experience using HashiCorp Packer or other Image-as-Code technologies
• Knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, NDES, and 802.1X authentication
• Experience supporting CrowdStrike, Trellix, or similar endpoint security platforms
• Familiarity with application packaging and delivery tools such as Liquidware FlexApp

Compensation for the Systems Engineer (VDI) includes:

Salary: Up to $160,000-$170,000 annually, depending on experience
