Job summary

ICON is seeking a Systems Engineer to advance ICON's TitanTeam and the Titan machine from design toward Serial Production in Austin, TX. You will work with senior engineers on hands-on development, validating requirements, and documenting designs with SolidWorks CAD and electrical schematics.

You will prototype hardware and software, contribute to system architecture, and help integrate subsystems for robust field deployment in a fast-paced, AGILE environment.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Systems Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Eng, Electrical Eng, CS or related science with 3+ years experience, or M.S. with 1+ year experience.
• Ability to rapidly prototype designs in hardware and software for fast timelines.
• Experience contributing to engineering teams and meeting milestones.
• Strong first-principles problem solving and communication in a team.
• Familiarity with industrial equipment, robotics, and field requirements.
• Experience with electrical power distribution and schematic tools.
• AGILE project management familiarity.
• Ability to prioritize in a dynamic startup environment.

Job description

ICON is looking for a Systems Engineer to help develop ICON's latest print systems on the TitanTeam, which is responsible for delivering the machine known as Titan to Serial Production. In this role, you'll support hands-on development and technical design work for well-designed, maintainable systems, working alongside senior engineers on the team. Based at ICON's Austin, TX office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Support the design, integration, and lifecycle management of systems under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Help ensure all aspects of a product are considered and integrated effectively to meet specified requirements.
• Develop and refine requirements to ensure they are measurable and traceable; log validation tests, analyses, demonstrations, and inspections into the RTM.
• Contribute to system architecture that meets requirements, with review from senior team members.
• Help ensure subsystems and components integrate to meet operational and functional needs.
• Use modeling and simulation tools as needed to analyze system behavior.
• Help identify integration risks and collaborate cross-functionally on mitigation.
• Support development of validation procedures and methods for verifying system requirements are met.
• Apply electrical, mechanical, and control system design principles to robotic platforms for construction applications (motion platforms, robotic manipulators, remote sensing, object manipulation).
• Design, assemble, and test prototypes; help specify instrumentation for R&D projects.
• Provide hands-on troubleshooting, process, and manufacturing support in a fast-paced, AGILE environment.
• Create design solutions for prototype equipment with good documentation practices, including CAD design in SolidWorks / SolidWorks Electrical Schematic.
• Be willing to move between office and field work as needed, and to contribute to the broader product development process.
• Assist in assembly of robotic systems for on-and off-planet applications.
• Assist in facility upgrades and equipment installation configuration.
• Assist in development and maintenance of autonomous robotic systems in harsh outdoor environments.
• Set individual goals consistent with team and company OKRs.
• Assist in productization documentation and support of cross-functional product deployment to the field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• B.S. degree in Systems Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a relevant science, with 3+ years of experience, or a Master's degree with 1+ years of equivalent experience, or proven experience in a similar role.
• Ability to rapidly prototype designs in hardware and software, and support transition to DFM and productization on fast timelines.
• Track record of contributing to an engineering development team and meeting milestones.
• Ability to apply first-principles thinking to solve problems.
• Exposure to design of industrial equipment/machinery, industrial or mobile robotics, and an understanding of field requirements for such machines.
• Familiarity with electrical power distribution, cable harnesses, and electrical panel design for industrial machinery.
• Experience using electrical schematic generation and management software.
• Adept at communicating in a collaborative team environment and seeking optimal solutions with teammates.
• Familiarity with AGILE project management methodology.
• A service-oriented attitude in a support role.
• Ability to prioritize and stay level-headed in a dynamic startup environment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• 3+ years of experience designing/building industrial automation equipment or related field.
• Startup experience, and/or a resourceful, innovative nature with an ability to improve
  processes.
• Ability to read electrical schematics and troubleshoot electrical/mechanical systems.
• Exposure to industrial safety systems.
• Strong communication skills, including explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• A hunger for learning and growth.
• Familiarity with integrated or autonomous robotic systems.

PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
• Must be prepared to work, in part, in extreme environments: temps >100°F or below freezing, sun, rain, mud, lack of electricity, etc.
• Must be able to travel 4+ weeks per year internationally.
