Job summary

Penn State University’s Applied Research Laboratory seeks a Systems Engineer and System Architect to define architectures for complex, multi-domain defense systems and lead architectural efforts across disciplines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Science.
• 5+ years of relevant experience.
• No required Certifications specified.
• R&D experience in systems engineering a plus.

Responsibilities

• Define and develop system architectures for complex, multi-domain defense systems.
• Apply modular design approaches to decompose complex systems into subsystems.
• Develop architectural frameworks, interface definitions, and integration strategies.
• Lead requirements analysis, functional decomposition, and allocation across hierarchies.
• Conduct trade studies and alternatives analyses for architectural approaches.
• Create and maintain system architecture documentation (diagrams, ICDs, specs).
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure architectural integrity.
• Support verification and validation planning to meet operational requirements.
• Communicate architectural concepts to stakeholders and sponsors.
