Job summary

The Michigan Poverty Law Program (MPLP) in Ypsilanti, MI, seeks a systemic litigation attorney focused on racial justice to expand its impact litigation for low-income Michiganders.

You will identify emerging racial justice issues, develop innovative strategies, and lead cases in state and federal court, collaborating with MPLP attorneys, legal aid programs, pro bono counsel, and community organizations to advance racial equity and systemic change.

Qualifications

• J.D. and licensed to practice law in Michigan.
• Minimum 5 years legal experience.
• Ability to assume significant leadership in impact litigation.
• Demonstrated commitment to racial justice and knowledge of related law.
• Ability to work with client groups and coalitions.
• Excellent legal research and writing skills.
• Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Strong organizational and strategic thinking abilities.

Responsibilities

• Identify, develop, and lead systemic litigation aimed at improving health, safety, and economic security for low-income Michiganders with a focus on racial equity.
• Bring affirmative litigation and pursue appeals in state and federal court.
• Identify and implement strategies to challenge racialized systems and practices.
• Collaborate with MPLP attorneys, Michigan legal aid programs, community organizations, and national advocacy groups to develop systemic litigation.
• Organize trainings and create resources for legal aid advocates on systemic litigation issues.
• Provide legal and technical support to legislators and community organizations on racial justice within poverty law context.
