Job summary

METRO is seeking a System Safety Engineer to develop, implement, and support METRO’s Safety Management System (SMS) in line with FTA, TX DOT, and PTASP. You will identify hazards, prepare PHAs, HAs, and VM, and audit analyses for effectiveness.

You will collaborate with METRO engineers and stakeholders to ensure safety requirements are met, track hazards, and maintain safety certificates and metrics across projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Engineering or a related technical field is required.
• Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in systems analysis in safety-critical activities; transit/transportation experience preferred.
• State of Texas PE license preferred; CSP, WSO – CSM, CSS, CHMT I or II, or RSD are desirable.
• Valid Class C Texas Driver’s license required; strong written and verbal communication; proficiency in MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Provide system safety engineering support for METRO operations, functions, and projects requiring safety review or approval.
• Assist with SMS implementation to reduce or eliminate risks and ensure safety milestones are met.
• Develop and review PHAs, HAs, VMs and supporting docs (FMEA, FMECA, Bowtie, FTA) for approval.
• Perform hazard tracking, auditing, and reporting; deliver safety status reports and certificates.
• Conduct in-depth safety studies including root-cause analysis and risk assessment processes.
• Coordinate with consultants and stakeholders to ensure safety requirements are met.
• Lead safety reviews and provide recommendations to the Director of Safety.
