Trainees progress to System Operator I after core competency evaluation. The role requires an Associate degree or 60 college credits, with strong communication and computer skills, and a valid driver's license.

The System Operator I is responsible for monitoring traffic conditions, coordinating incident response, and ensuring efficient operation of the Transportation Management Center (TMC) in Region 2. This role requires detailed familiarity with TMC daily obligations, tools, and systems. Operators must understand communications protocols, be knowledgeable about the locations and purpose of all Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) elements and be capable of independently following procedures and direction.An Operator I – Trainee will begin in a training capacity and is eligible for promotion to System Operator I upon successful completion of a core competency evaluation developed by NYSDOT Region 2 management. This evaluation ensures the trainee demonstrates proficiency in TMC operations, systems, and protocols.
