Job description

A Talascend client is seeking a System Design Engineer, Fluid Systems for a long-term contract role.

This position can work remotely.

SUMMARY:

The System Design Engineer reports to the System Design Manager and is focused on system design, analysis, systems engineering, and engineering oversight. In this role, you will act as a system design engineer for advanced nuclear reactor projects. The successful candidate will integrate and coordinate with engineers working on interfacing systems. The System Design Engineer will work as part of a high-performing team of engineers and scientists.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Design of reliable and fault tolerant fluid systems from development of requirements through final design and commissioning.
  2. Perform technical trade studies and decisions to refine system design.
  3. Develop maintenance plans for system hardware.
  4. Develop in service inspection and in service test plans for system hardware.
  5. Develop system level functional and performance requirements and flow requirements down to component specifications.
  6. Oversight of system construction planning and eventually construction, test, and startup.
  7. Review work of suppliers to determine compliance with requirements and minimize system level integration issues.
  8. Support design reviews as system designs are established and refined.
  9. Coordinate system level operations and author system level operational narratives.
  10. Develop and review technical design documents, such as System Design Descriptions, Interface Control Documents, Engineering Design Specifications, etc.
  11. Generate design packages for system designs including coordinating of calculations, design reports, drawings, and specifications.
  12. Interface with the design team to create and manage drawing packages of system designs, including but not limited to Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), 3D models, and system interface drawings.
  13. Interface with various design disciplines (such as mechanical, instrumentation and controls, civil, and nuclear) to identify and develop system design and performance criteria.
  14. Propose and initiate testing programs for system development and qualification.
  15. Provide support and oversight during test execution, evaluation of test results, and reporting of test results.
REQUIREMENTS:
  1. B.S. in Mechanical, Chemical, Nuclear Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university and 5+ years direct experience with proven mechanical systems skills.
  2. Experience with piping systems and the ability to read and draw P&IDs.
  3. Strong understanding of design codes (ASME, BPVC, API).
  4. Experience with power plant operations and maintenance.
  5. Familiar with safety classifications of systems, structures, and components.
  6. Familiar with piping design and analysis.
  7. Familiar with fault detection and monitoring.
  8. Experience working to quality standards on design activities, such as ASME NQA-1, AS 9100, ISO 9001, or equivalent.
  9. Must be a self-starter and possess ability to coordinate with minimal direction.
  10. Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and design constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives.
  11. The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, able to communicate openly, and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
  12. Actual position starting level and title will be determined based on assessment of qualifications.
  13. Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence.
  14. Excellent technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
