Job summary

METR is seeking a System Administrator to own and optimize technical operations, improve internal processes, and support technical teams. You will manage user access across Okta, Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, Tailscale, and AWS, while maintaining hardware inventory and MDM.

You’ll design scalable workflows, collaborate with users to solve problems, and develop comprehensive documentation and security monitoring processes to ensure smooth, secure operations.

Job description

METR is a nonprofit research organization developing scientific methods to assess AI capabilities, risks, and mitigations. This System Administrator role focuses on owning and optimizing technical operations and user support processes, maintaining systems, improving internal processes, and ensuring smooth operations for technical teams.

What You'll Do

• Manage user access and permissions across multiple platforms including Okta, Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, Tailscale, and AWS with SCIM/SSO integration
• Manage physical IT inventory including MacBooks and MDM implementation
• Oversee and optimize SaaS platforms including user administration, cost management, and integration improvements
• Serve as primary point of contact for technical support, building playbooks for common issues and escalating to internal teams or external support as needed
• Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for systems, processes, and troubleshooting procedures, and own IT security infrastructure including monitoring and periodic audits

What You Need

• Proven experience in systems administration with strong knowledge of user administration on Linux systems including user creation and SSH access
• Experience managing and integrating SaaS platforms and identity management systems
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to design efficient processes and workflows in collaboration with users
• Excellent communication skills and ability to support technical users effectively
• Experience with Linux server administration including software updates and network troubleshooting

Nice to Have

• Knowledge of IT security monitoring best practices
• Demonstrated expertise with AWS services, especially IAM and EC2, with additional experience with RDS, S3, and complex VPC topologies
• Background in process automation and integration between different platforms
• Experience supporting development teams and understanding their unique needs
• Experience implementing SOC-2
• Infrastructure-as-code tools and practices
• Deep understanding of model provider platforms, models, and access controls such as Claude Platform administration
