Job summary

Qualifications

• Associates or Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or Drafting.
• 3–7 years of switchgear/industrial electrical distribution design experience.
• Experience supporting EPC or industrial construction projects.
• Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and schematics.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed design packages for low- and medium-voltage switchgear and power distribution systems.
• Prepare equipment layouts, general arrangement drawings, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring schematics, interconnection diagrams, control schematics, cable schedules, and termination drawings.
• Coordinate switchgear designs with structural, electrical, mechanical, and project engineering teams to ensure complete system integration.
• Prepare Bills of Material (BOMs), equipment schedules, and supporting documentation for procurement and project execution.
• Review engineering revisions and incorporate customer-requested design changes throughout the project lifecycle.
• Provide technical support during fabrication, installation, FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities.

This position is responsible for preparing detailed electrical drawings, equipment layouts, panel arrangements, wiring schematics, and construction documentation that support engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning activities. The Switchgear Designer works closely with Engineers, Project Managers, Procurement, Field Services, and Operations to ensure equipment designs meet customer specifications, applicable codes, and project schedules.

The ideal candidate possesses strong technical drafting skills, experience with electrical power distribution systems, and the ability to coordinate multiple engineering projects within a collaborative environment.

• Maintain engineering documentation, revision history, and drawing control in accordance with company quality procedures.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives by enhancing drafting standards, engineering documentation, and design efficiency.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Drafting, or a related technical discipline preferred.
• 3–7 years of experience designing switchgear, switchboards, motor control centers (MCCs), relay panels, or industrial electrical distribution systems.
• Experience supporting EPC, industrial construction, utility, or power distribution projects preferred.
• Experience developing electrical construction documents for industrial facilities is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong understanding of electrical power distribution systems and switchgear applications.
• Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), IEEE, NEMA, UL, and applicable electrical industry standards.
• Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, control schematics, equipment layouts, and customer specifications.
• Understanding of protective relays, circuit breakers, bus systems, transformers, metering, control power, and electrical distribution equipment.
• Knowledge of engineering documentation standards and drawing revision practices.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
• High attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality engineering documentation.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency with AutoCAD.
• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical preferred.
• Experience with Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or Autodesk Revit is a plus.
• Working knowledge of Bluebeam Revu.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint.
• Experience using document management systems and project collaboration software preferred.

Preferred Certifications

• Autodesk Certified Professional – AutoCAD
• Autodesk Certified Professional – AutoCAD Electrical (preferred)
• Certified Electrical Designer (CED) (preferred)
• OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour Construction (preferred)

Working Conditions

This position is based at Champion Integrated Building Solutions' Humble, Texas facility and requires close collaboration with engineering, project management, procurement, field services, and operations teams. Occasional travel to customer sites or project locations may be required to support design reviews, equipment inspections, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), installation activities, and commissioning.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to access manufacturing and warehouse environments while wearing required personal protective equipment when necessary.
