Job summary

Novant Health is seeking a detail-oriented Switchboard Operator to support hospital communications and safety monitoring. This role operates a computerized switchboard, routes internal and external calls, and monitors critical systems to ensure timely responses across the facility.

You will respond to emergencies, initiate appropriate routing and alerts, communicate clearly with staff and emergency services, and maintain professionalism and calm under pressure.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• At least 1 year of switchboard/operator experience preferred.
• Ability to communicate with diverse staff and patients and maintain confidentiality.
• Must type at least 30 wpm and operate a computerized switchboard.

Responsibilities

• Operate a computerized switchboard to manage internal and external calls.
• Monitor critical hospital systems and escalating issues as needed.
• Respond to emergencies and initiate appropriate routing and alert protocols.

• Respond to emergencies and initiate appropriate routing and alert protocols
• Maintain calm and professionalism during high-pressure situations
• Ensure timely and accurate communication with staff, departments, and emergency services

What We're Looking For

• Education: High School Diploma or GED, required.
• Experience: Minimum of one year experience as switchboard operator, preferred.
• Additional Skills (required):Must be able to communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and all levels of authority. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be flexible and able to respond to changing priorities in a fast paced environment. Must demonstrate ability to type at least 30 wpm. Manual dexterity necessary to operate computerized switchboard console and keyboard. Ability to work alone during day, evening, and night. Ability to see and read. Must possess a clear, pleasant and professional telephone voice and manner. Ability to hear and understand phone calls.
