Job summary

YMCA of Youngstown is seeking a Swim Instructor to teach participants skills per the YMCA Swim Lesson program while ensuring student safety. You will follow lesson plans, prepare equipment, and document progress and certificates of achievement; maintain hygiene and safety in the aquatic area.

The role emphasizes building relationships with children and families, delivering engaging lessons, and upholding YMCA safety standards and policies. Training within 30 days of hire is required.

Qualifications

• Must be energetic, creative, enthusiastic and work well with children.
• Ability to communicate and teach swimming skills to students in an effective manner
• Current YMCA Swim Instructor or Red Cross WSI Certification, CPR for Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Oxygen Administration.
• New Staff Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, Blood Borne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment, and Y Leader training within 30 days of hire date.

Responsibilities

• Teach aquatic and safety skills according to level being taught.
• Follow prepared lesson plans and have equipment to be used during class prepared before the start of class.
• Maintain class attendance and student skill accomplishment records.
• Generate completed mid-session reports for each student, and certificates of achievement for students who are ready to progress to the next level.
• Keep Aquatic area clean and decks free from clutter.
• Recognize potential hazards, communicate and eliminate hazards relative to program and program areas.
• Adhere to policies and responsibilities in the Aquatic Staff Manual
• Plan and implement program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
• Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings.
• Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
• Maintain positive relations with patrons and other staff.
