Qualifications

  • Must be at least 15 years of age.

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all backgrounds.
  • Familiarize self with YMCA rules and policies within 30 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct swimming lessons per YMCA guidelines with prepared lesson plans.
  • Build positive relationships with participants, families and staff.
  • Maintain attendance and progress records.
  • Perform equipment checks and ensure availability of gear.
  • Check pool for hazards and report issues.
  • Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
  • Greet and assist members and volunteers in a courteous, friendly manner.
  • Respond to member needs and resolve customer service problems.
  • Assist in maintenance duties (sweeping, mopping, cleanliness).

Job Location: Minot, ND 58701, Position Type: Part Time, Salary Range: $14.75 - $15.75 Hourly, POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, Aquatics Lead, and Swim Lesson Lead, the Swim Instructor at the Minot Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and throughout shift.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  • Greet and assist all members, potential members, volunteers, and staff in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner. Be enthusiastic towards members by learning their names and expressing an interest in their YMCA activities. Strive to enrich their YMCA experience by introducing them to new programs, staff, members, and volunteer activities.
  • Respond to members' needs. Contact appropriate personnel when necessary. Handle complaints in a courteous manner. Effectively negotiate and resolve customer service problems.
  • Assist in maintenance duties to include sweeping, mopping, and general cleanliness of Aquatics areas.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the YMCA rules, policies, and emergency procedures and act as the control center for the Aquatics Area and Locker Rooms during emergency situations.
  • Shares aquatic program information with members, using available tools and resources (e.g., handouts, schedules).
  • Maintain working knowledge of swim lesson and aquatics trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Assist other staff as needed and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • This individual must familiarize themselves with YMCA rules and policies within 30 days of employment. Since this position is dealing directly with members, program participants, volunteers, and staff in a position of authority, above-average verbal communication skills are required.

Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.

Ability to be in the chlorinated water for extended periods of time (up to 3 hours).

Ability to work with children with diverse abilities and special needs.

May frequently be exposed wet and/or humid environments.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Acute hearing skills are required. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
