Position Summary

Provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.

Essential Functions

1. Instructs swim lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, ensuring safety, engagement, and adherence to pool rules, with prepared lesson plans.
2. Builds effective relationships with students and parents; encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules; refers students and parents to other programs as appropriate.
4. Maintains records such as attendance and progress reports.
5. Attends staff meetings and training sessions.
6. Follows all YMCA policies, including emergency procedures, and completes incident reports as necessary.
7. Organizes and maintains class equipment; reports damaged equipment.
8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
9. Willing to accept additional responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications

1. Minimum age of 15.
2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
3. Ability to demonstrate all strokes and swim instructor skills per YMCA standards.
4. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent preferred.
5. YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent preferred.

Physical Demands

1. Ability to instruct and observe proper stroke technique.
2. Ability to lift equipment and small to average-sized children.
3. Ability to swim and demonstrate all strokes and skills.
