Job summary

West Suburban YMCA in Newton, MA is seeking a Full Time Swim Instructor to join our team. The role provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.

Great benefits package, including a 12% retirement contribution; starting pay $15.50/hour, dependent on experience. You will deliver lessons per YMCA guidelines, build relationships with students and parents, manage attendance and progress, and participate in meetings and trainings.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 15 years old.
• Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
• Ability to demonstrate all strokes and swim instructor skills per YMCA standards.
• Current American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent preferred.
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

• Instructs swim lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines with prepared lesson plans.
• Builds authentic relationships with students and parents; encourages involvement.
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules; refers to other programs as needed.
• Maintains attendance and progress records.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings; follows safety procedures.
• Organizes and puts away class equipment; reports damages.
• Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
• Willingness to accept additional duties as needed.

Position Summary

Provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.

Essential Functions

1. Instructs swim lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines (i.e. keeping swimmers safe, challenged, and actively engaged, maintain a safe swimming environment, and enforcing pool rules & policies), having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules; and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
4. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.)
5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports, as necessary.
7. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
9. Willingness to accept responsibilities and duties other than those assigned.

Qualifications

1. Minimum age of 15.
2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
3. Must be able to demonstrate all stokes and swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
4. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, or equivalent preferred.
5. YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent preferred.

Physical Demands

1. Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke technique.
2. Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
3. Ability to swim and demonstrate all strokes and skills.
