Job summary

The Salvation Army USA Central Territory in Grand Rapids is seeking a Swim Instructor to deliver lessons to students of all ages and abilities. You will design instructional programs, prepare lesson plans, present techniques, and manage classroom activities.

You will maintain pool safety, assist with equipment, document attendance and progress, and participate in training. Requirements include reading/writing English, with Spanish preferred, and relevant certifications.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Experience teaching swim lessons or coaching swim team.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English; Spanish preferred.
  • American Red Cross WSI certification required within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and maintain pool cleanliness and safety.
  • Set up, clean up and maintain lesson equipment; inventory and report issues.
  • Instruct swim lessons with a structured lesson plan; ensure safety and engagement.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques and manage classes professionally.
  • Provide individual and group feedback to help swimmers reach development goals.
  • Record lesson plans, attendance, and incident/reports as needed.
  • Attend quarterly instructor in-service training.
  • Maintain communication with the program manager/coordinator regarding class development.
