Valley of the Sun YMCA in Phoenix is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor to lead swim lessons for youth and adults, ensuring safety and alignment with YMCA curricula. The role requires planning sessions, maintaining records, and clear communication with members and families.

You will prepare and adapt lesson plans, supervise classes, and promote YMCA values while providing a positive, inclusive learning environment. Minimum age 16 and strong safety awareness are essential.

Description

Provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in group and private swim lessons. Maintains safe environment while conducting and monitoring students in swimming classes.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A SWIM INSTRUCTOR:

• Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with Y guidelines, aligned with the Y-USA curriculum.
• Prepare session and lesson plans accordingly for all classes and levels taught, adjust as needed.
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers to other available programs.
• Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, incident reports, etc.).
• Follows all policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
• Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged or needed equipment.
• Serves as a role model to participants and lives the vision and values of the YMCA movement.
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE A SWIM INSTRUCTOR:

• Minimum age of 16.
• Ability to maintain a level of physical and mental readiness.
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• Ability to intentionally incorporate the YMCA Program Goals into each session of swim lessons.
• Ability to effectively communicate information with members, peers, and supervisors.
• Must be observant, safety conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency.
• Ability to think in the abstract, solve problems, and make quick decisions under stress.
• Immediately notify the appropriate staff of any broken equipment or unsafe aspects of the pool.
