Job summary

YMCA Detroit is hiring a Swim Instructor to lead swimming classes, develop lesson plans, and foster positive connections with families in the Downriver area.

Responsibilities include communicating progress to parents, sharing program schedules, maintaining records, and attending trainings. High school education and CPR/AED/First Aid certifications are required; YMCA instructor certification is preferred or provided.

Qualifications

• High school education at minimum, 16+ years of age.
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications.
• Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification or training provided.

Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons and prepares lesson plans per YMCA guidelines.
• Builds authentic relationships with parents and students to communicate progress.
• Conveys aquatics program information and schedules and refers to other programs.
• Mantains records and attends meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

General Function

The Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

• At a minimum, some high school level education (over 16+ years of age)
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification, and Emergency Oxygen
• Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification OR training provided.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons and prepares lesson plans according to the YMCA.
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with parents and students to connect and inform parents of each other and students’ accomplishments.
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers students and parents to other programs.
• Maintains records and attends meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Abilities & Skills

• Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
• Ability to lift equipment and to lift a small to average-sized child.
