Job summary

The Stuart C Gildred Family YMCA in Santa Ynez, CA is seeking an entry-level, part-time Swim Instructor. You will follow YUSA lesson plans, assess progress, and deliver safe, inclusive swimming instruction for children and families.

Requirements include being at least 16, obtaining a background check, and completing YUSA certifications within 60–90 days of hire. The role offers YMCA membership, education assistance, retirement fund, paid sick leave, and a flexible schedule.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Ability to obtain a criminal record clearance, if over 18.
• High School Diploma or equivalent; valid work permit required if a minor.
• If applicable, complete YUSA swim instructor certification within 90 days of hire.
• Complete required certification within 60 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Follow YUSA established lesson plans, understand stroke progression & implement the Core Values into lesson plans.
• Communicate with families on a regular basis about program information and child’s progression in swimming.
• Complete swim assessments, evaluations, and certificates of completion.
• Identify incorrect swimming techniques and provide correction.
• Adjust teaching techniques according to swimmer’s needs.
• Maintain tracking of class attendance and ensure participants are released to caretakers.
• Provide exceptional customer service and foster connections with members.
• Participate in in-service trainings and keep certifications current.
• Create an environment that is welcoming, nurturing, and inclusive for all members and guests.
• Work collaboratively and respectfully as part of a staff team.
• Ensure building, grounds, and equipment are in working order and report concerns.
• Support the annual campaign process including member education.
• Understand role as a mandated reporter of elder and child abuse.

What does a Swim Instructor do?

• Follow YUSA established lesson plans, understand stroke progression & implement the Core Values into lesson plans

• Ensure building, grounds, and equipment are in working order. Report any concerns
• Maintain certifications and take advantage of professional growth opportunities
• Support the annual campaign process including education of members
• Understand your role as a mandated reporter of elder and child abuse. Report and respond to situations in accordance with policies and procedures
• Ensure safety of children in facilities and programs and that proper supervision is provided
