Job summary

Carilion Clinic is seeking a Swim Instructor to teach swim lessons on a flexible schedule at the Roanoke facility. The role requires knowledge of water safety, teaching methods, and strong communication with families.

You will implement lesson plans, ensure participant safety, and adapt instruction to various ages and abilities. Preferred candidates have lifeguard experience, BLS CPR/First Aid, and WSI certification or plan to obtain within 90 days of hire.

Qualifications

• Minimum two years high school education.
• One year lifeguard experience preferred; swim lesson instruction preferred.
• WSI Certification or obtain within 90 days of hire date.
• American Heart Association BLS Certification (CPR/AED, First Aid).
• Lifeguard Certification through American Red Cross or other approved certifying body.

Responsibilities

• Be familiar with water safety courses and know how to use course materials effectively.
• Adapt your teaching approaches to the age, experience and ability of participants, so they can meet course objectives.
• Provide for the health and safety of participants, including ensuring that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards, and that materials and equipment are safe.
• Cover all material required in a level.
• Communicate regularly with participants and their parents, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress.
• Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies in accordance with facility emergency action plans.
• Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
• Complete records and reports.
• Participate in regular in-service training sessions.
• Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

How You'll Help Transform Healthcare: Teach swim lessons

As a swim instructor, you need thorough knowledge and application of swimming and water safety skills. Thorough knowledge and application of teaching swimming and water safety skills. An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures. Leadership and public relations skills. Communication skills. Decision-making skills.

What We Require

• Education: Minimum two years high school education.
• Experience: Minimum one year lifeguard experience preferred. Previous swim lesson instruction preferred.
• Licensure/Certification:
  • WSI Certification or Obtain within 90 days of hire date
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification (CPR/AED, First Aid)
  • Lifeguard Certification through American Red Cross or other approved certifying body.
• Other: Previous work with children and adult private lessons and children group lessons.

Compensation Range

$13.00 - $18.00

Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
