Job summary

City of Morgan Hill is hiring Swim Instructors for year-round part-time positions. The role involves teaching swimmers of all ages, from infants to adults, using structured lesson plans and water-safety techniques.

Availability is required for evenings (4pm–7:15pm) and potential weekend shifts. Qualifications include high school graduation, preferably with Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard certifications.

Qualifications

  • High school graduation desirable.
  • Experience as Swim Instructor or Lifeguard desirable.
  • Red Cross certifications encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute structured lesson plans that incorporate swimming techniques and water safety.
  • Maintain constant supervision of all participants and ensure safety.
  • Perform rescues, administer first aid, CPR, and summon emergency personnel as required.
  • Submit Accident/Incident Reports within 24 hours of incidents.
  • Communicate progress to supervisor and parents as appropriate.

Job description

Swim Instructor

$18.00 per hour for High School Student

$19.50 per hour for High School Graduate

$20.00 per hour if WSI Certified

Year-Round, Part-Time Position (Temporary, Non-Benefited)

Swim Instructors teach people of all ages how to swim. The students may include infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, and adults, including people with special needs. The classes range from private lessons to groups of 8 depending on swimmers' ability.

Schedule

We are currently hiring Swim Instructors for year-round employment (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday 4pm-7:15pm)

Selection Process

Applications will be screened, and those applicants determined to have the best experience, skills, and qualifications will be invited for an oral interview. Prior to appointment, applicant must authorize a reference check, a background check must be completed, including fingerprinting for submission to the Department of Justice.

Essential Functions
  • Be familiar with the descriptions and requirements for each class level offered through the City of Morgan Hill.
  • Plan and execute a well-structured lesson plan that incorporates swimming techniques and water safety skills while creating a fun learning environment.
  • Adapt your teaching approaches to the age, experience, and ability of participants.
  • Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Maintain a constant watch over all participants, even while providing individual instruction.
  • Evaluate students and submit a completed report card to Supervisor in a timely fashion
  • Effectively communicate with supervisor, staff and participants. Keep participants and if appropriate, their parents informed about their progress in the program. Inform coordinator and/or supervisor of any safety issues or concerns.
  • Perform rescues, administer first aid, perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and summon Supervisors and emergency personnel as required for injuries or other medical emergencies
  • Ensure the safety of all patrons participating in Swim Lessons; submit Accident/Incident Reports to the Supervisor within 24-hours of the incident.
  • Perform related duties as assigned
Education
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is desirable, but not required.
Experience
  • Previous experience as a Swim Instructor or Lifeguard is desirable.
Certificates
  • Valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certificate is desirable.
  • Valid Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid, & Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificates are strongly encouraged.
Special Requirements
  • Position requires availability 10-15 hours per week from September through May.
  • Applicants must be physically capable of sustained walking, standing, or climbing.
  • Applicants must be willing to work flexible hours; including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Applicants must be willing to wear solid color swim wear at all times when on duty.
