Position Title

$16.50 – $20.00 per hour (based on experience)

Summary

Group swim instructors provide group lesson instruction in swimming techniques, skills, and water safety to participants. The position may include scheduling and teaching private lessons, though this is not required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Educates the public on safe aquatic habits and encourages cooperation with good public relations.
  • Leads group swim instruction for children of various ages and skill levels in classes of up to six participants.
  • Maintains a safe environment for all students.
  • Accurately judges placement of students for swim instruction.
  • Prepares and signs all aquatic certificates.
  • Uses and cares for all aquatic equipment and teaching aids.
  • Maintains the required level of physical fitness to fulfill rescue or emergency procedures.
  • Attends all required City‑sponsored clinics, workshops, and meetings.
  • Assists with maintenance and care of the facility, including cleaning duties.
  • Performs any other related or similar duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Minimum age 15. Any relevant education or experience is valued.

Language Skills

Ability to read instructions and communicate with the aquatics supervisor and the general public. Ability to present information and respond to questions.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve problems, interpret instructions, and initiate proactive measures to ensure program quality, customer service, and safety.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

Current American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/PR certifications required or obtained within 90 days of hire.

Physical Demands
  • Bending, stooping, pulling, pushing, jumping, twisting, balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and climbing.
  • Physical activity required while leading/demonstrating classes.
  • Lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Hand‑eye coordination for computer use.
  • Read written materials and observe programs.
  • Speech and hearing capabilities to maintain communications.
Swim Instructor Performance Steps
  1. Performs as required by job description with direct supervision; punctual attendance; attends all training unless excused; sets up and tears down class equipment; accurate record keeping; communicates with participants and parents; favorable review by Aquatics Coordinator.

  2. Performs all duties in Step 1; shows initiative beyond expectations; favorable review; assists in training new staff; teaches at least 15 sessions.

  3. Performs all duties in Steps 1 & 2; assists head instructor with scheduling; gains knowledge in maintenance; thorough knowledge of American Red Cross Learn to Swim program; teaches at least 30 sessions; favorable review.

  4. All steps based on budget availability and City policy. Steps may be skipped with area manager approval.
