Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Long Beach is seeking a part-time swim coach to help maintain safe swimming conditions and to create a positive coaching environment for participants.

Responsibilities include coaching, session preparation, adherence to emergency procedures, and strong collaboration with members and staff. Lifeguard and swim instructor certifications are required, with health and background checks.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Current lifeguard certification from YMCA or Red Cross, incl. First Aid, CPR, AED.
• Current swim instructor certification from YMCA or Red Cross; crossover if needed.
• Complete YMCA coach training within 90 days of employment.
• Pass pre-employment practicum and written exam.
• Be able to perform lifeguard and swim instructor duties; safe practices.
• Criminal clearance including fingerprints.
• Health screening with negative TB and drug test.
• Complete required online trainings.
• Strong written and oral communication.
• Two+ years as swim instructor in aquatics facility.
• Past competitive swimming experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Coach participants in swimming.
• Prepare for and coach all groups; use lesson plans and evaluations.
• Know and follow emergency procedures and report as required.
• Maintain relationships with members, participants, families and staff.
• Apply safety rules for pool/aquatic area consistently.
• Serve as first responder in branch emergencies.
• Ensure scheduled shift is covered at all times.
• Check pool for hazards on arrival.
• Provide emergency care until professionals arrive.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
• Maintain open communication with participants, coaches, referee, staff and supervisor.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
