Job description

Geo Owl is seeking a candidate for a Swedish Toponymist (Geospatial Linguist) role to support a customer site in Springfield, Virginia.

Active TS/SCI clearance and willingness to obtain a POLY level clearance are REQUIRED to be considered.

The Toponymist (Geospatial Linguist) will analyze and conflate information related to feature data in the Geographic Names Database (GNDB), collaborating closely with Intelligence Community (IC) geographic names experts.

The selected candidate will follow agency guidance and policies to address questions about proper name usage, Romanization systems, and descriptive information in standard products.

Services involve using the Geographic Names Processing Systems (GNPS), charts, imagery, and geospatial tools to refine name information for various products and respond to inquiries via the Ad Hoc Query process.

Additionally, the candidate will prepare files and maps, accurately input data to update the GNDB, including batching work into the database.

The accuracy and reliability of work are crucial to supporting mission success.

Primary Responsibilities
  1. Scan and geo-reference hardcopy maps, research, and order geospatial data sources and commercial imagery for reference.
  2. Conflate georeferenced maps and imagery with the GNDB.
  3. Interpret and apply policies from US BGN, DoS, NATO, and related organizations regarding geographic names.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma with 2–4 years of relevant experience.
  • ILR Skill Level Two certification in reading (DLPT5 2/2) in the language, with at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience with ArcGIS or GeoMedia Pro, creating shapefiles, geo-databases, using maps and imagery for extraction, and research skills.

Active TS/SCI clearance and willingness to obtain a POLY level clearance are REQUIRED to be considered.

  • Experience processing geographic names following agency policies.
  • Self-starter capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to multitask and deliver quality products on time.
  • Teamwork skills.
  • Education: BA with 2–4 years relevant experience or Master’s with less than 2 years relevant experience.
