Job summary

The University at Albany seeks an Associate Vice President for Economic Development & Innovation to lead the Office of Economic Development & Innovation, oversee technology transfer and IP management, and expand entrepreneurship and translational programs.

This senior leader reports to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development, supervises key offices, and builds cross‑sector partnerships with industry, government, and academia, aligning initiatives with SUNY and state priorities

Qualifications

• Minimum of 8 years of progressive leadership experience in economic development, technology transfer, research administration, commercialization, or innovation ecosystems.
• Experience at an R1 research university, major research organization, or corporate R&D organization.
• Experience managing federally funded innovation or economic development programs.
• Experience with startup and technology transfer ecosystem.
• Expertise in research commercialization and IP strategy.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior-level leadership for the Office of Economic Development and Innovation.
• Develop and execute strategic initiatives that enhance UAlbany's impact in innovation, research translation, entrepreneurship, and regional economic development.
• Advise the Vice President for Research and Economic Development on strategic opportunities, priorities, policy development, and resource allocation.
• Lead multi-year planning for innovation capacity-building and industry engagement.
• Represent the Vice President for Research and Economic Development on university committees and coalition work.
• Lead the university's intellectual property strategy, including patenting, licensing, and IP portfolio development.
• Oversee invention disclosure review, patent decisions, and commercialization readiness evaluations.
• Develop and monitor licensing contracts and MTAs/NDAs.
• Develop relationships with faculty innovators and industry partners to promote invention disclosures and commercialization.
