APTIM is seeking a Survey Technician II for on-site duties at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, SF. You will support environmental remediation with stakeout, data collection, and as-built documentation, under the direction of a licensed Professional Land Surveyor.

Responsibilities include verifying boundaries, establishing control points, and producing survey exhibits using Trimble and AutoCAD tools. Strong accuracy and communication are required on a safety-focused site.

Job Overview

Build the survey record behind safe, accurate environmental remediation. APTIM is seeking an experienced Survey Technician II to support federal environmental remediation and radiological investigation activities at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard (HPNS) in San Francisco, California.

This onsite role combines construction layout, field data collection, heavy-equipment grade-control support, quality checks, mapping, and as-built documentation in a highly coordinated, safety-focused environment. The position reports administratively to the Construction Manager and receives technical direction from a California-licensed Professional Land Surveyor. Professional survey deliverables will be reviewed and approved by the Professional Land Surveyor.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

• Stake and verify excavation boundaries, trench unit limits, former sanitary sewer and storm drain alignments, and other approved remediation work limits.
• Establish, maintain, and verify project control points and site benchmarks under the technical direction of the Professional Land Surveyor.
• Provide construction stakeout, line, grade, elevation, and layout support for excavation, backfill, slopes, catch points, offsets, drainage infrastructure, utilities, roads, site improvements, and restoration activities.
• Collect, reduce, organize, and quality-check survey data, field notes, measurements, calculations, point files, and related records.
• Verify excavation and subgrade elevations, dimensions, limits, and tolerances and support cut-and-fill quantities, bulking and compaction factors, progress quantities, and mass-haul calculations as assigned.
• Prepare field sketches, maps, plots, reports, and draft as-built survey exhibits for review and approval by the Professional Land Surveyor.
• Use survey-grade GPS/GNSS/RTK systems, preferably Trimble, as the primary field method and robotic total stations when reception, obstructions, tolerances, or site conditions require optical control. Set up and level instruments; establish and verify control; collect points; perform layout and staking; and use Trimble Access for 3D or model-based layout and line, grade, and elevation checks.
• Develop and maintain site calibrations or localizations, control files, coordinate systems, digital terrain or elevation models, design surfaces, linework, and machine-control files needed to support GPS-enabled grade-control systems on excavators, dozers, graders, and other heavy equipment.
• Establish independent check points and verify line, grade, and elevation to confirm machine‑control setup and field performance against approved project data.
• Perform routine equipment and system checks; coordinate instrument calibration, maintenance, or repair; and assist with troubleshooting field data, connectivity, and coordinate-system issues.
• Create, clean, analyze, and process approved survey and design data using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, Trimble Business Center, Leica Infinity, MicroStation, or other project-approved survey and grade-control applications.
• Coordinate daily survey needs and findings with the Construction Manager, engineers, construction crews, environmental personnel, radiological personnel, and the Professional Land Surveyor.
• Follow all APTIM and project safety requirements, including required training, work‑zone controls, and personal protective equipment.

Basic Qualifications

• Minimum of three years of field surveying experience; construction layout or environmental remediation experience is strongly preferred.
• High school diploma or GED; additional education or training in surveying, geomatics, civil technology, or a related field is preferred.
• Hands‑on proficiency setting up, operating, checking, and maintaining GPS/GNSS/RTK equipment, preferably Trimble, robotic total stations, levels, and field data collectors, including use of Trimble Access for control verification, point collection, 3D or model‑based layout, stakeout, and line, grade, and elevation checks.
• Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, grading plans, utility plans, survey control data, and construction details and to prepare complete, accurate field notes and electronic survey records.
• Experience establishing site calibrations or localizations, control networks, coordinate systems, digital terrain models, design surfaces, and machine‑control files used to support GPS‑enabled heavy‑equipment grade control.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS applications and the ability to work across integrated survey and machine‑control hardware and software platforms.
• Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to coordinate effectively with field and office personnel.
• Ability to reliably report to the assigned onsite work location at Hunters Point in San Francisco.
• Ability to pass required pre‑employment physical and drug screening and satisfy project access requirements.
• Current 40‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER training and applicable annual refresher are preferred. APTIM will provide required training for otherwise qualified candidates.

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay range for this position is $40.00--$48.00 per hour. Compensation depends on several factors including: experience, education, key skills, geographic location of the position, client requirements, external market competitiveness, and internal equity among other employees within APTIM.
