Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a Land Surveying Technician to perform basic surveying tasks for transportation projects. You will assist with location, right of way, utilities and construction surveys using field equipment in accordance with project schedules.

The role emphasizes safety, accuracy and teamwork; duties include courthouse research on plats and supporting quality control in both field and office settings.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform physically demanding labor, work in all types of terrain and weather conditions.
• Knowledge of basic mathematical calculations using algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
• Knowledge of field land surveying equipment (data collectors, GPS, robotic total station, levels, etc.).
• Knowledge of land surveying principles and practices to include location, right of way and construction survey activities.
• Knowledge of surveying instruments and tools, including programmable calculators and electronic data collection equipment.
• Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Project Activities: Perform land surveying project activities including location, right of way and utilities, and construction phases.
• Quality Control: Perform quality control reviews, both in the field and office, to ensure land surveying products are accurate.
• Survey Activities: Conduct basic field land surveying activities from scoping to post-construction; follow VDOT policies and regulations.
