Job summary

CBS² is seeking a Survey Specialist to support field survey, staking, and civil engineering projects across Wisconsin and Minnesota. This entry-level role collaborates with senior survey staff, project managers, engineers, and technicians to collect data and prepare deliverables for design and construction teams.

You will gain hands-on experience with GPS, total stations, and survey workflows while growing in a supportive, client-focused environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 1–2 years in surveying, staking, civil construction, or related field work.
• Interest in surveying, civil engineering, construction, or mapping.
• Ability to perform outdoor field work in varying conditions.
• Follow safety procedures and established field workflows.
• Strong attention to detail and reliability; willingness to learn.
• Comfort with tablets, computers, and Microsoft Office tools.
• Good communication with crews, PMs, engineers, and technical teams.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.

Responsibilities

• Assist field survey tasks for municipal, transportation, utility, and civil projects.
• Support construction staking under supervision of senior staff.
• Collect survey data using GPS, total stations, levels, etc.
• Organize and transfer survey data for engineers and designers.
• Prepare and maintain field notes, staking records, and surveys.
• Follow established survey procedures and workflows.
• Assist with equipment setup, operation, and maintenance.
• Communicate field conditions and data needs to the team.
• Review field data for completeness and accuracy, as needed.
• Adhere to safety near traffic, equipment, and active sites.
• Support traffic control setup when required.
• Demonstrate willingness to learn new tools and methods.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

CBS² is currently recruiting for a: Survey Specialist reporting to the Survey & Plat Team Leader.

CBS² is seeking an energetic, highly motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter to join our team as a Survey Specialist. This is a full-time role based out of any of our five locations.

The Survey Specialist will support field survey, construction staking, and civil engineering project work across Wisconsin and Minnesota. This entry-level role will assist with collecting survey data, supporting field crews, organizing project information, and helping prepare accurate survey deliverables for design and construction teams. The Survey Specialist will work closely with senior survey staff, project managers, engineers, and technicians while developing hands-on technical skills in field survey, staking, equipment use, and survey data workflows. Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist with field survey work for municipal, transportation, utility, construction, platting, and civil engineering projects.
• Support construction staking for streets, utilities, site improvements, and other project features under the direction of senior survey staff.
• Collect survey data using GPS, total stations, levels, and other survey equipment.
• Assist with organizing, formatting, and transferring survey data for use by engineers, designers, technicians, and project managers.
• Help prepare and maintain field notes, staking records, survey files, and related project documentation.
• Follow established survey procedures, workflows, and direction from senior survey staff.
• Assist with setup, operation, care, and maintenance of survey equipment and field supplies.
• Communicate field conditions, project questions, and data needs to senior survey staff and project teams.
• Support basic review of field data, measurements, and staking information for completeness and accuracy.
• Follow safe field practices when working near traffic, construction equipment, utilities, and active project sites.
• Assist with traffic control setup and awareness as needed to support safe survey operations.
• Demonstrate a willingness to learn new tools, software, survey methods, and project types.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1-2 years of experience in surveying, construction staking, civil construction, engineering technology, or related field work.
• Interest in surveying, civil engineering, construction, mapping, or related technical field work.
• Ability and willingness to perform outdoor field work in varying weather conditions and project environments.
• Ability to follow technical direction, safety procedures, and established field workflows.
• Strong attention to detail, reliability, and willingness to learn.
• Comfortable using basic technology, tablets, computers, and Microsoft Office tools.
• Ability to communicate effectively with survey crews, project managers, engineers, and technical team members.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.

Desired Skills & Experience

• Associate degree or technical degree in surveying, civil engineering technology, construction, GIS, CAD/drafting, or a related field.
• Internship, coursework, or hands-on exposure to surveying, construction staking, civil engineering, or field data collection.
• Familiarity with GPS equipment, total stations, Trimble systems, Leica, Carlson, or other survey equipment/software.
• Exposure to Civil 3D, OpenRoads Designer, GIS, or related mapping/design software.
• Experience working on construction sites, municipal projects, transportation projects, utilities, or other infrastructure-related field work.
• Interest in pursuing survey-related certifications or long-term growth in the surveying profession.
