Survey Party Chief Job Description – I-95 Widening (Pooler, GA)

Job Summary

The Survey Party Chief will lead field survey teams on the I-95 MM 0-8 Project. This position plays a key role in supporting civil engineering and construction initiatives, including roadway, bridge, utility, and site development work. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in land surveying, a hands-on leadership style, and the technical skills to ensure precision and compliance across all field operations.

Responsibilities

1. Demonstrate management and organizational skills while leading a survey crew on active infrastructure projects.
2. Perform topographic, boundary, construction layout, and as-built surveys using GPS, robotic total stations, and drones.
3. Interpret project plans, drawings, and specifications to guide field activities.
4. Ensure survey work meets timelines, quality standards, and safety protocols.
5. Maintain accurate field notes, sketches, and reports.
6. Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure project alignment.
7. Train and mentor junior survey staff.
8. Oversee maintenance and calibration of survey equipment.
9. Provide progress updates and report issues to the Survey Manager.
10. Travel out of town as needed.
11. Work at night as needed.

Qualifications

• Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Pre-employment screening; ICE is a drug-free workplace.

Education & Experience Requirements

• Minimum 4 years of land surveying experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role as a Survey or Party Chief.
• Experience on DOT or transportation infrastructure projects, especially highway widening.
• Experience with SCDOT or GDOT roadway or bridge projects is preferred.
• Familiarity with Georgia and South Carolina survey standards.
• Understanding of boundary, topographic, and construction surveys.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal surveying regulations.
• Ability to interpret engineering plans and blueprints.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

The role involves physical activities like walking, standing, bending, and climbing. Occasionally, lifting objects up to 80 pounds is required. Navigating construction sites and inspecting materials is essential. Visual discernment, color differentiation, and auditory recognition are necessary. Effective communication skills are required. The role demands adaptability, extended sitting, and working in varied environmental conditions, including night shifts and active traffic situations.
