Job summary

Hurt & Proffitt is seeking an Entry-Level Land Surveyor to join our growing survey team in Blacksburg, Virginia. This is an excellent opportunity for someone starting a career in land surveying to gain hands‑on experience with experienced surveyors and technicians.

The role involves assisting with boundary, topographic, construction, and other survey projects, working outdoors, and developing long-term skills in surveying. Travel and outdoor work are expected as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Willing to travel for job assignments; some overnight stays may be required.
• No prior surveying experience required; helpful but not necessary.
• Ability and willingness to learn surveying equipment and procedures.
• Must have a valid driver’s license with at least 3 years of driving experience.
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and handle physical tasks.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Dependable, punctual, and a team player.

Responsibilities

• Assist survey crews with field surveys (boundary, topographic, construction, as-built).
• Operate and learn surveying equipment (total stations, GPS/GNSS, data collectors, levels).
• Help establish property corners, control points, elevations, and monuments.
• Record accurate field measurements and survey data.
• Locate utilities, structures, and site features.
• Perform basic calculations and review field data for accuracy.
• Maintain surveying equipment and vehicles.
• Work outdoors in varying weather and terrain.
• Follow safety procedures and work with experienced surveyors.
• Communicate effectively with crew, project managers, and clients.

The Entry-Level Land Surveyor will assist with a variety of surveying projects, including boundary, topographic, construction, and other land surveying services. The ideal candidate is dependable, willing to learn, comfortable working outdoors, and interested in developing a long‑term career in the surveying profession.

Responsibilities

• Assist survey crews with field surveys, including boundary, topographic, construction, and as‑built surveys.
• Operate and learn to use surveying equipment, including total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, data collectors, and levels.
• Assist with establishing property corners, control points, elevations, and other survey monuments.
• Collect accurate field measurements and record survey data.
• Assist with locating existing utilities, structures, property markers, and other site features.
• Perform basic calculations and review field data for accuracy.
• Maintain and care for surveying equipment and vehicles.
• Work outdoors in a variety of weather and terrain conditions.
• Follow company safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
• Work under the direction of experienced surveyors and gradually take on additional responsibilities as skills and experience develop.
• Communicate effectively with survey crew members, project managers, clients, and other team members.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Willing to travel out of town as needed for job assignments, some overnight stays will be required.
• Previous surveying, construction, engineering, or related experience is a plus, but not required.
• Ability and willingness to learn surveying equipment, technology, and procedures.
• Must have a valid driver’s license in good standing with a minimum of 3 years’ licensed driving experience and reliable transportation.
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and perform physical tasks associated with field surveying.
• Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies as needed.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Dependable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
• Good communication and organizational skills.

Estimated Base Pay Range: $17 - $21 per hour

How We Determine Pay: Final compensation within this range is determined in good faith and is based on objective factors. These include the candidate’s specialized skills, level of experience, geographic location, and specific educational background or certifications.

Additional Compensation: This position will be eligible for 401(k) matching and ownership through our ESOP and may also be eligible for incentive pay subject to company performance and performance-based raises.
