Job summary

Hurt & Proffitt, located in Halifax, Virginia, is hiring an Entry-Level Land Surveyor to join our growing field team. You will support boundary, topographic, and construction surveys under experienced surveyors, learning to operate total stations, GPS/GNSS, and data collectors.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Willing to travel out of town for job assignments, some overnight stays will be required.
• Previous surveying, construction, engineering, or related experience is a plus, but not required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license in good standing with a minimum of 3 years’ licensed driving experience and reliable transportation.
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and perform physical tasks associated with field surveying.

Responsibilities

• Assist survey crews with field surveys, including boundary, topographic, construction, and as-built surveys.
• Operate and learn to use surveying equipment, including total stations and GPS/GNSS equipment.
• Assist with establishing property corners, control points, elevations, and survey monuments.
• Collect accurate field measurements and record survey data.
• Assist with locating utilities, structures, and site features.
• Perform basic calculations and review field data for accuracy.
• Maintain and care for surveying equipment and vehicles.
• Work outdoors in various weather and terrain conditions.
• Follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
• Progress to additional responsibilities under supervision.

Hurt & Proffitt is seeking an Entry-Level Land Surveyor to join our growing survey team in Halifax, Virginia. This position is a great opportunity for someone who is beginning their career in land surveying and wants to gain hands‑on experience working alongside experienced surveyors and technicians.

The Entry-Level Land Surveyor will assist with a variety of surveying projects, including boundary, topographic, construction, and other land surveying services. The ideal candidate is dependable, willing to learn, comfortable working outdoors, and interested in developing a long‑term career in the surveying profession.

Responsibilities

• Assist survey crews with field surveys, including boundary, topographic, construction, and as-built surveys.
• Operate and learn to use surveying equipment, including total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, data collectors, and levels.
• Assist with establishing property corners, control points, elevations, and other survey monuments.
• Collect accurate field measurements and record survey data.
• Assist with locating existing utilities, structures, property markers, and other site features.
• Perform basic calculations and review field data for accuracy.
• Maintain and care for surveying equipment and vehicles.
• Work outdoors in a variety of weather and terrain conditions.
• Follow company safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
• Work under the direction of experienced surveyors and gradually take on additional responsibilities as skills and experience develop.
• Communicate effectively with survey crew members, project managers, clients, and other team members.

Estimated Base Pay Range: $17 - $21 per hour

How We Determine Pay: Final compensation within this range is determined in good faith and is based on objective factors. These include the candidate’s specialized skills, level of experience, geographic location, and specific educational background or certifications.

Additional Compensation: This position will be eligible for 401(k) matching and ownership through our ESOP and may also be eligible for incentive pay subject to company performance and performance-based raises.
