Job summary

Hurt & Proffitt in Halifax, Virginia, is seeking an Entry-Level Land Surveyor to join our growing survey team. This role offers hands-on field experience, working alongside experienced surveyors on boundary, topographic, construction, and other projects.

The ideal candidate is dependable, eager to learn, and willing to travel. This entry-level position emphasizes safety, accuracy, and developing a long-term career in surveying.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Willing to travel out of town as needed for job assignments, some overnight stays will be required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license in good standing with a minimum of 3 years’ licensed driving experience and reliable transportation.
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and perform physical tasks associated with field surveying.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Dependable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Assist survey crews with field surveys, including boundary, topographic, construction, and as-built surveys.
• Operate and learn surveying equipment, including total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, data collectors, and levels.
• Assist with establishing property corners, control points, elevations, and other survey monuments.
• Collect accurate field measurements and record survey data.
• Assist with locating existing utilities, structures, property markers, and other site features.
• Perform basic calculations and review field data for accuracy.
• Maintain and care for surveying equipment and vehicles.
• Work outdoors in a variety of weather and terrain conditions.
• Follow company safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
• Work under the direction of experienced surveyors and gradually take on additional responsibilities as skills and experience develop.
• Communicate effectively with survey crew members, project managers, clients, and other team members.

Estimated Base Pay Range: $17 - $21 per hour

How We Determine Pay: Final compensation within this range is determined in good faith and is based on objective factors. These include the candidate’s specialized skills, level of experience, geographic location, and specific educational background or certifications.

Additional Compensation: This position will be eligible for 401(k) matching and ownership through our ESOP and may also be eligible for incentive pay subject to company performance and performance-based raises.
