Job summary

PSI is seeking a versatile Survey Data / Field Technician to support large-scale infrastructure projects nationwide. The role blends field data collection with office processing, drafting, and data analysis to deliver accurate, high-quality deliverables from setup through final plans.

You will split time between leading field data collection and processing survey data using AutoCAD Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center, with travel across CONUS and potential per diem for assignments.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree preferred.
• 3–5 years of progressive land surveying experience.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, and MS Office.

About the Role & Company

We are seeking a versatile, driven Survey Data / Field Technician to support large-scale infrastructure and linear energy projects across the country. This hybrid role bridges the gap between field collection and office processing, serving as a key transitional position for professionals advancing from field surveying into office-based technical data roles. You will split time between leading on-site data collection efforts and processing, modeling, and drafting incoming survey data in the office. By combining hands-on field expertise with technical drafting and data analysis, you will ensure our project teams deliver accurate, high-quality deliverables from initial setup through final plan sets.

Office Location & Travel Flexibility

• 100% Travel Roles (CONUS Per Diem): In addition to locally based crews, we warmly welcome candidates with high travel availability to support major nationwide field projects. All 100% travel assignments include daily per diem allowances at standard CONUS (Continental U.S.) rates to support our personnel during active project deployments.

Essential Responsibilities (Leadership & Execution)

In the field, you will lead or support field measurement efforts, operating conventional and GPS surveying instruments including total stations, levels, and data collectors. You will read and interpret plans and construction drawings, guide field procedures, perform initial quality checks, and maintain detailed field notes, sketches, and logs. When leading on site, you will direct field setups, maintain safety protocols, and ensure assigned survey gear and vehicles are properly maintained and secured.

In the office, you will process, manage, and verify incoming survey data for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to project specifications. You will use AutoCAD Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center to import field codes, analyze survey points, build surface models, and draft alignment drawings, plats, and legal descriptions. Additional office duties include conducting deed research, plotting record boundaries, maintaining organized digital file archives, and collaborating with Project Managers, Crew Chiefs, and office personnel to resolve discrepancies quickly.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position operates in both indoor office settings and outdoor field environments. Field duties involve walking and hiking across rough, steep, or uneven terrain in varying weather conditions, along with the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment. Office duties involve extended periods of sitting, detailed computer drafting, and lifting up to 25 pounds of project files or plot sets. Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination are necessary for both operating precision field instruments and executing detailed CAD workflows.

Qualifications & Requirements

Candidates must hold a high school diploma or equivalent, with an associate degree in surveying, geomatics, or a related technical field preferred. A minimum of three to five years of progressive land surveying experience is required, demonstrating proficiency both on a field crew (such as Instrument Technician or Crew Chief) and in introductory office data processing. Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, and Microsoft Office applications is required. Candidates must hold a valid driver's license with a clean Motor Vehicle Record, pass a pre-employment drug screen and 7-year background check, and demonstrate the flexibility to balance office hours with outdoor travel assignments.
