Job summary

Horrocks is seeking a Survey Crew Chief to lead field surveys and support multi-discipline projects. You will perform topographic, boundary, and construction surveying, ensuring accurate field notes and data transfer to office staff.

The role requires extensive experience with conventional and GPS survey methods, Trimble equipment, and strong leadership to mentor junior crew members while coordinating with project managers and clients on site.

Qualifications

  • 8-10+ years of progressively responsible surveying experience, including leadership of field survey crews on transportation, municipal, land development, and boundary projects.
  • 5+ years in Survey Crew Chief or equivalent leadership role, planning daily field operations, mentoring juniors, ensuring quality deliverables.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop crews, coordinate with project managers and clients, and resolve field challenges independently.
  • Willingness to work primarily in the field with some office tasks.
  • Experience in topographic, transportation, ALTA/NSPS, boundary surveys, elevations, staking, and data management.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a company vehicle and maintain project schedules.
  • Lead field surveys for design and construction projects; assign work and mentor staff.
  • Communicate with client representatives on site to ensure satisfaction and relay needs to office teams.
  • Identify and report potential construction difficulties to the office support team.
  • Analyze survey maps, locate monuments, and retrace property lines as required.
  • Ensure field information is accurately collected and transferred to the office.
  • Perform both field and office tasks as needed.

Job description

As a Survey Crew Chief, you will have the opportunity to be involved in large, multi-discipline projects while developing diverse skill sets.

What are the core responsibilities for the role?
  • Competent in using conventional survey equipment and GPS systems in the collection of data or the placement of construction control. Including digital levels.
  • Well-versed in all field techniques related to boundary retracement, design support, and construction surveying support, topographic mapping, and Right of Way mapping.
  • Responsible for clear, informative, and accurate field notes.
  • Efficiently complete daily topographic, boundary and control surveys for design and construction surveys
  • Communicate with the client’s on-site representatives, when needed, to ensure satisfaction with work performed and the communication of his needs to the office support team.
  • Identify and report unique or potential construction difficulties to the office support team
  • Analyze survey maps, locate monumentation and physical evidence required in the retracement of property lines
  • Ensures that field information is accurately collected and transferred to the office support team
  • Comfortable performing field and office tasks.
Qualifications, Skills, And Competencies

This position requires the operation of a company vehicle. All candidates must hold a valid driver’s license and will be subject to a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check. Employment is contingent upon meeting Horrocks' Fleet & Safety minimum requirements. Candidates will be asked to provide consent for the MVR check as part of the hiring process.

  • 8-10+ years of progressively responsible surveying experience, including experience leading field survey crews on transportation, municipal, land development, and boundary surveying projects.
  • 5+ years of experience serving as a Survey Crew Chief or equivalent leadership role, with demonstrated ability to plan daily field operations, assign work, mentor junior staff, and ensure quality deliverables.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop survey crews, maintain project schedules, coordinate with project managers and clients, and resolve field-related challenges independently.
  • Must be willing and able to initially work primarily in the field, but also have the ability to work on office tasks
  • Experience in topographic surveys, transportation surveys, ALTA/NSPS surveys, land boundary surveys, subdivisions and records of survey, elevation certificates, construction staking, and data management. Exposure to first and second-order control surveys is a plus
  • Fluent with Trimble equipment. Mobile, aerial, and ground-based lidar scanning experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Office, and MS Office. OPUS solution experience and point cloud exposure are a plus
  • Experience in using linework codes with Topo Surveys
  • Knowledge of UDOT and local safety standards
