Job summary

Pinellas County Government in Clearwater, FL is seeking a Survey and Mapping Technician 1 (Instrument Operator) to support field surveys and mapping work. Location is Clearwater, with outdoor field duties typical of this role.

You will operate survey instruments under a licensed professional, collect data, and contribute to capital projects, while learning technical surveying skills in a collaborative Public Works team.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. Certificate.
  • One year of experience in land survey work or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of survey instruments and assist with field data collection as part of a survey team.
  • Perform technical field work on surveying and mapping projects.
  • Work under the direction of a licensed Professional Surveyor and Mapper to develop skills.
  • Contribute to projects supporting the Capital Improvement Program, land development, and construction.
  • Collaborate with field and office staff to deliver accurate, high-quality products.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Survey and Mapping Technician 1 (Instrument Operator)

Location: 22211 U.S. Highway 19 North, Clearwater, FL 33765

Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

What Would You Do?
  • Collect Survey Data: Operate a variety of survey instruments and assist with field data collection as part of a survey team.
  • Support Survey Projects: Perform technical field work on a variety of surveying and mapping projects.
  • Work with Professionals: Work under the direction of a licensed Professional Surveyor and Mapper while developing your technical knowledge and skills.
  • Support Major Projects: Contribute to projects supporting the County’s Capital Improvement Program, land development, construction, and other County initiatives.
  • Work in the Field & Office: Collaborate with both field and office-based staff to deliver accurate, high-quality products and services.
  • Other Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned to support the Division’s operations and projects.
What Do You Need To Have?
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. Certificate
  • One (1) year of experience in land survey work; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
Additional Requirements:
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
  • Skilled in the use of survey instruments such as but not limited to: Total Stations, Automatic Levels, data collection systems and GPS.
  • Basic Knowledge of computers and keyboard familiarity.
  • Possession of sufficient physical stamina to work long hours outdoors under various field conditions with exposure to traffic, extreme heat and rainfall.
Highly Desirable
  • Knowledge of the techniques and practices of land surveying and mapping.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, deeds and maps.
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of general construction principles and practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications, maps, and construction drawings.
  • Ability to make routine surveying computations quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to maintain and calibrate survey instruments.
