Job summary

Boston Medical Center is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join the Operating Room team. You will scrub in on general OR cases, prepare instrumentation, and maintain sterile technique to support patient safety.

This per diem position offers days starting at 6:30 a.m., with full-shift coverage and collaboration with surgeons and staff to ensure efficient turnover and high-quality care. The ideal candidate will have an accredited Surgical Tech program and NBSTSA/ARC-STSA certification or

Qualifications

• Accredited Surgical Tech Program and an Associate’s Degree or higher.
• ARC/STSA-Accredited Surgical Technology Program; NBSTSA Certification; or grandfather certification under MA law.
• 1–3 years of experience as a Surgical Technician in an acute-care setting.

Responsibilities

• Perform scrub duties according to procedure with high skill and efficiency.
• Work with the surgical team to coordinate patient care.
• Participate in staff meetings and in-service presentations.
• Accountable for accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments before, during, and after procedures.

Position Summary

The Surgical Technologist is an essential member of the surgical team, ensuring appropriate selection, preparation, and sterility of instrumentation and equipment necessary to contribute to a positive outcome for the surgical patient. They are responsible for assisting the team by scrubbing in on general OR cases.

Position: Surgical Technologist • Department: Operating Room • Schedule: Per Diem – Full Shift (8+ hours, day shift starting at 6:30 a.m.)

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

• Perform scrub duties according to procedure, demonstrating a high level of skill, efficiency, and surgical consciousness.
• Work closely with the entire surgical team to facilitate and coordinate exceptional, efficient, and quality patient care.
• Participate in staff meetings and in‑service presentations.
• Accountable for accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments before, during, and after procedures.
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of national patient safety goals.
• Act as preceptor for staff members for all aspects of the OR.
• Maintain collegial behavior of respect and consideration with regard to the work environment (e.g., restocking rooms, returning equipment/supplies, cleaning work areas, station, and communication as appropriate).
• Maintain an aseptic technique to preserve a sterile environment.
• Anticipate the instruments/equipment the surgeon will need next.
• Assist in turnover of rooms and prep the OR for patients.
• Actively participate in the "Time Out", giving full attention to the process and speaking up if something does not seem right, stopping the line until there is resolution.
• Hold retractors and complete additional tasks at the surgeon’s request during the procedure.
• Handle tissue specimens obtained for laboratory analysis.
• Organize and restock the OR following the surgical procedure.
• Work effectively as part of a team, maintaining good relationships with surgeons and other employees.
• Communicate verbally and in writing in English.

Job Requirements

Education: Accredited Surgical Tech Program, Associate’s Degree or above.

Certifications, licenses, registrations required: ARC/STSA‑Accredited Surgical Technology Program; or NBSTSA Certification; or meet the Massachusetts Surgical Technologist Law certification grandfather requirement (employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility on or before July1,2013).

• 1‑3 years of experience as a Surgical Technician in an acute‑care setting.
• Per Diem – Full shift required.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation Range: $33.08 – $49.15 per hour. Base pay is determined by education, experience, and licensure/certifications relevant to the position.
