Job description

Overview

South Shore Health is a community‑based health system offering Surgical Technologists the opportunity to work across a wide range of specialties, supporting both adult and pediatric patients in the operating room. The role is based in the SSH Operating Room at 55 Fogg Road, Weymouth, MA. The position is full‑time, 40 hours per week, primarily day shift with occasional rotations to evenings/night, weekend rotation, and a minimal call requirement averaging three shifts per month. Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.
  • Understand anatomy related to procedures and techniques used by surgeons.
  • Assemble and troubleshoot all equipment necessary for each procedure.
  • Ensure all required equipment is in the room prior to the start of a case.
  • Operate all electro‑surgical, diagnostic, and disposable equipment, and equipment unique to each specialty.
  • Apply aseptic technique and maintain sterile conditions.
  • Perform surgical scrub, accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts per policy.
  • Assist in positioning patients under RN or surgeon guidance and maintain patient safety.
  • Handle all surgical specimens appropriately.
  • Monitor for and call attention to breaks in technique, communicating with RN and surgeons.
  • Conduct surgical scrub and asepsis procedures.
  • Maintain the operating room sanitation and assist in its maintenance.
  • Perform all duties defined in the scope of service, addressing the unique nature of the client.
  • Update and maintain technical skills, adapt to changes in surgical technique and modalities.
  • Attend hospital‑sponsored training programs and complete annual mandatory in‑services.
  • Maintain ERT certification and comply with departmental policies.
  • Serve as a role model and preceptor for new staff and assist turnover teams with OR protocol.
  • Embrace technological solutions to work processes.
  • Maintain a neat, organized work environment and adhere to safety procedures.
  • Respond to safety questions in annual mandatory education program and participate in code response training.
  • Utilize proper body mechanics and operate equipment safely.
Qualifications
  • Prior surgical technologist/operating room experience required.
  • Certification preferred; completion of an accredited Surgical Technician Program required.
  • Graduation from a formal accredited surgical technician training program preferred.
  • Must hold CST‑ERC certification within 12 months of completing a program; all Surg Techs who did not work prior to 7/1/13 are required to be certified.
  • Minimum work experience: OR experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with surgeons, nurses, and peri‑operative assistants.

Compensation
