Overview

Job Description
Under general supervision performs delegated patient care functions assisting in surgical procedures and in the preparation of supplies and equipment in an operating room. Provides high level input to unit operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation of the operating room and in the selection of surgical instruments and equipment by reviewing the surgeon preference list and conferring with the circulating nurse to gather appropriate equipment.
  • Counts needles, sponges and instruments.
  • Ensures medications on the sterile field are properly labeled.
  • Ensures fluids are maintained at a safe temperature.
  • Ensures instrumentation is cleaned at point of use, restrung, and sprayed with enzymatic cleaner.
  • Performs preoperative preparation of patients, including skin preparation, draping and positioning patients for procedures in accordance with department procedures and protocols, as needed.
  • Matches preference cards [PLs] to correct scheduled cases and work with assigned RN to update PLs working with individual surgeons and surgical services.
  • Hands instruments to the surgeon as requested and/or required, preparing suture material for use, and assisting with gowning and gloving of surgical team in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Performs duties associated with basic patient care, including picking-up blood, delivering specimens to clinical laboratories, performing room turnover between cases, escorting patients when assigned and checking emergency carts for needed supplies. Transports patients and runs errands as directed by RN.
  • Matches preference cards to correct scheduled cases. Works with the surgeon to update preference cards as needed to ensure accuracy.
  • Assists in the preparation of supplies for sterilization including pre-cleaning, washing and wrapping instrument.
  • Provides oversight and accountability for team members. Ensures appropriate sterilization methods are used with various implants, instruments and supplies using standardized sterilized indicators.
  • Ensures that instrumentation, supplies, equipment, and specialty items are obtained, stored, and ready for use. Work with leadership and staff to limit supply and instrument costs through good inventory control.
  • Reviews and assists revising policies and procedures.
  • Promotes a continual learning environment by providing training to others formally and informally.
  • Active participation in regulatory preparedness including Joint Commission with specific task assignments.
  • Completes and sends work orders for environment of care or equipment issues.
  • Directs preceptors and assists RN educators to promote learning for new staff orienting to the scrub role. Assists with the orientation of new staff.
  • Provides formal and informal education (in-service) to staff.
  • Assists in the development of individualized orientation programs and collaborates with other team members in evaluating students.
  • Participates in a departmental committee related to policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Leads unit-based projects and participates in unit or organizational committees.
  • Serves as lead for service line or assists service line coordinator ensuring that all equipment and supplies for service line are ordered and maintained.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. Completion of 15 continuing education units (CEU) required. Completion of a Surgical Technologist training program required.

Experience: 5 years of related experience required. Proficiency in 3 service lines and expertise in 1 required (Not required in Labor & Delivery and Cardiac)

Licensure/Certifications: BLS certification required. Certification from a National certification program as a Surgical Technologist required.

  • Pay Range: $34.7-$46.26
