Job summary

UPMC West Mifflin Ambulatory Surgery Center is seeking a Full-Time Surgical Technologist to join a high-performing, patient-focused team where your skills make an impact.

You’ll support surgeons and nursing staff, assist with sterile prep and instrument handling, and help maintain a safe, efficient flow across a wide variety of cases in a busy 4-OR setting. The role offers a predictable weekday schedule, self-scheduling, and a supportive health system environment.

Responsibilities

• After surgery, transfer patients to recovery and clean/restock the OR.
• Serve as a resource; precept students and new staff.
• Prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens for lab analysis; apply dressings.
• Participate in committees and interdisciplinary teams.
• Assist team with sterile gowns/gloves.
• Prepare OR before operation: set up instruments, drapes, and solutions.
• Collaborate with clinicians to disseminate new knowledge.
• Label medications and hand to surgeon per policies.
• Maintain a clean, safe environment with aseptic technique.
• Prepare patients for surgery; wash, shave, position, and drape.
• During surgery, pass instruments, count sponges/needles.

• Work in a busy 4-OR ambulatory surgery center alongside a collaborative, supportive team

• Play a key role in supporting surgeons and nursing staff, ensuring efficient surgical flow and excellent patient care

Responsibilities:

• After surgery, may help transfer patients to the recovery room. Clean and restock the operating room.


• Serves as a resource to other staff members; precepts students and new employees.


• Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings.


• Participates in committees and inter-disciplinary teams.


• Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.


• Before an operation, help to prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment. Adjust and check equipment to ensure it is working properly.


• Collaborates with Clinician to disseminate new knowledge.


• Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to surgeon according to established policies and procedures.


• Ensure clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique.


• Prepare patients for surgery by wash, shave, and ensure aseptic incision sites. May transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the operating table, and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.


• During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
