Job Overview
UPMC East Hospital is hiring a full‑time Surgical Technologist to support the Operating Room. The position includes 3, 12‑hour shifts per week starting as early as 6 am Monday–Friday, with occasional rotating on‑call time. The role supports a range of services including orthopedics, robotics, vascular hybrid, and more. Sign‑On Bonus
- 0–1 year of experience: $10,000 bonus (2‑year commitment) or $12,000 bonus (3‑year commitment)
- 1–2 years of experience: $12,000 bonus (2‑year commitment) or $17,000 bonus (3‑year commitment)
- 2+ years of experience: $15,000 bonus (2‑year commitment) or $25,000 bonus (3‑year commitment)
Bonus is paid within the first 90 days.
Employee Compensation
Pay range shown is for the Intermediate Surgical Technologist title (minimum 2 years of experience). The rate may be adjusted for candidates with more or less experience.
Responsibilities
- Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to the surgeon according to established policies and procedures.
- Help to prepare the operating room before an operation by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions; assemble both sterile and non‑sterile equipment; adjust and check equipment to ensure proper function.
- During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and assistants; hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site under the supervision of the surgeon; help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
- Assist in preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis; help apply dressings.
- Assist surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
- After surgery, may help transfer patients to the recovery room; clean and restock the operating room.
- Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites; may transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the table, and cover them with sterile drapes.
- Ensure a clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique.
- Maintain certification and comply with continuing education requirements as specified by credentialing organizations. Must be licensed or meet the state’s requirements for surgical technologists.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
- CPR or Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire according to AHA standards.
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technology in Surgery‑Certified (TSC) within 6 months of program completion; exception policy for facilities unable to meet certification requirements.
- Child Abuse Reporting Act (Act 31) with renewal.
- Act 33 and Act 34 with renewal.
- FBI Clearance under Act 73 with renewal.
- Compliance with PA House Bill 81 requirements for certification and ongoing education.
