Job summary

GBMC HealthCare is seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist to support operating room teams with aseptic technique and instrument handling across diverse procedures. The role emphasizes collaboration with nursing and anesthesia to maintain a safe, sterile environment.

Candidates should have 3+ years of experience, certification prerequisites, and proficiency in multiple surgical areas, including L&D and GOR/WOSC. This is an on-site position with a strong emphasis on quality and patient safety.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a CAAHP accredited training program for Operating Room Technicians with emphasis on basic, intermediate, and advanced procedures across all clinical specialties.
  • Acquisition of the necessary knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to the expanded roles of Surgical Technologist I, II, and III.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a surgical technologist.
  • Proficiency in at least three surgical service areas, including GOR/WOSC, with demonstrated skill in all cases performed in L & D.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare operating rooms by selecting and opening sterile supplies according to procedure and physician preference card.
  • Ensure all sterile equipment and instruments are in good working order prior to cases.
  • Pass instruments and provide sterile items to surgeons and assistants; hold retractor devices while maintaining sterile technique.
  • Assist with the application of sterile dressings during closure, and with sponging or suctioning operative sites.
  • Check, mix, and distribute appropriate fluids, drugs, drains, and tubing on the sterile field.
  • Perform surgical counts in accordance with policy and procedure, following AORN standards.
  • Assist in transporting patients and securing equipment from other departments as needed.

Job description

Surgical technologists (ST) are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the medical team, assisting in the preparation and care of the surgical patient within the operating room. The ST collaborates with nursing, anesthesia, and other surgical personnel to facilitate a safe and sterile environment, applying principles of aseptic technique, human anatomy, surgical procedures and technology to support physicians during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic interventions.

Education
  • Completion of a CAAHP accredited training program for Operating Room Technicians with emphasis on basic, intermediate, and advanced procedures across all clinical specialties.
  • Acquisition of the necessary knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to the expanded roles of Surgical Technologist I, II, and III.
Certifications
  • NSBC or NCCT Certified Surgical Technologist.
  • Heart Saver or BLS CPR Certification.
Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a surgical technologist.
  • Proficiency in at least three surgical service areas, including GOR/WOSC, with demonstrated skill in all cases performed in L & D.
  • Advanced knowledge of instrumentation and supplies and the ability to scrub majority of procedures throughout surgical specialties.
Skills and Responsibilities
  • Prepare operating rooms by selecting and opening sterile supplies according to procedure and physician preference card.
  • Ensure all sterile equipment and instruments are in good working order prior to cases.
  • Pass instruments and provide sterile items to surgeons and assistants; hold retractor devices while maintaining sterile technique.
  • Assist with the application of sterile dressings during closure, and with sponging or suctioning operative sites.
  • Check, mix, and distribute appropriate fluids, drugs, drains, and tubing on the sterile field.
  • Perform surgical counts in accordance with policy and procedure, following AORN standards.
  • Receive and pass surgical specimens to the circulating nurse promptly and correctly identify all specimens.
  • Assist in operating room turnover, instrument cleaning, reassembly, and delivery to the decontamination area.
  • Assist in wrapping sterile items for sterilization when necessary and obtain stock and supplies for the operating room.
  • Return equipment to proper locations; assemble case carts for the next working day.
  • Assist in transporting patients and securing equipment from other departments as needed.
  • Use data and information to continuously improve care and practice, enhancing outcomes.
  • Act as a leader or participant in quality improvement processes, identifying variances and proposing alternatives.
  • Assist in unit-based audits and education, and support PEM nurses in maintaining surgeon preference cards.
  • Provide self‑development in lifelong learning, mentor and precept others, and demonstrate leadership in decision making and problem solving.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk almost constantly up to ninety percent of work time, with frequent lifting and positioning of patients, heavy instruments, and equipment.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity for handling retractors and delicate surgical instruments.
Work Conditions

Work occurs in surgical suites with exposure to anesthesia gases, lasers, surgical plume, radiation, chemicals, blood, body fluids, and cleaning solutions. Access to medication and clean supply areas is required.

Pay Range

$27.32 - $44.80 per hour. Final salary offer will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience, and alignment with organizational needs.
