Summary

Surgical Technologists (ST) are allied health professionals who assist in the preparation and care of surgical patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics under the general direction of a professional nurse. The ST possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a surgeon's performance of invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. The ST who has a dual function in the operating room and the ambulatory setting demonstrates competency in the care of surgical patients preoperatively and postoperatively in the ambulatory surgical clinic setting.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities of a surgical technologist.
  • Provide leadership at the unit level to correct safety and clinical quality deficiencies and lead/implement changes.
  • Provide leadership at the peri‑operative surgical service unit level.
  • Assist with teaching newly hired technologists and student operating‑room technologists; present or teach at the surgical service, hospital, or health system level.
  • Serve as a role model to new employees and other staff members; coach the team to anticipate resources.
  • Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and protocols at the unit level.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, staff members, and physicians.
  • Assist in efforts to improve resources through Kaizen projects (yellow/purple belt status).
  • Assume responsibility for self and ensure that the policies, procedures, and safety practices of the operating room and hospital are reinforced; complete the precepting course and actively assist in training new hires.
  • Use critical thinking to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and perform other duties as required; provide leadership on the service as a chief resource.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and practice of aseptic and surgical technique.
  • Collaborate with the Team Coordinator to perform checks, maintenance, and control of surgical supplies, trays, and equipment.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge related to OR emergency situations and help troubleshoot service‑specific specialty equipment.
  • Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and protocols at the department level.
  • Pass instruments, supplies, and sutures to operative team members for any specialty case when needed.
  • Check the daily schedule in advance for any special needs such as prior‑day set‑up or special supplies.
  • Act as a liaison with CPD regarding any instrumentation issues.
  • Continue creation, updating, and instrument reduction of service‑specific trays via the Censitrac system.
  • Work to help standardize service‑specific trays.
  • Obtain yellow belt status and help develop processes to improve cost containment and decrease waste in the room.
Education Requirements
  • Graduation from a Surgical Technology program.
Licensure and Certification Requirements
  • NBSTSA certification or NCCT certification.
  • BLS required.
Professional Experience Requirements
  • Senior Surgical Technologist‑A: minimum 3 years of clinical practice.
  • Senior Surgical Technologist‑B: minimum 5 years of surgical technology practice.
  • Candidates for Surgical Technologist 2‑A and 2‑B must meet requirements established by the Surgical Technologist Clinical Ladder Review Board.
