Job summary

UNC Health Care is seeking a Surgical Technologist I for UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC. The role supports surgeons and RNs to ensure safe, aseptic operation room conditions and assists in instrument handling, preparation, and case planning.

The position is full-time, 36 hours per week with an evening schedule. Requires BLS for Healthcare Providers and graduation from an accredited surgical technology or nursing program; 0-3 years of experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs technical skill duties in all operating room areas with proper practices.
• Maintains and sterilizes instrumentation.
• Follows aseptic technique and reports contamination.
• Performs surgical counts and reports discrepancies.
• Labels drugs and solutions; monitors quantities.
• Prepares and handles surgical specimens.
• Sets up instruments and drapes for procedures for optimum access.
• Assists the surgeon; understands anatomy affecting procedures.
• Assists in instrument planning and case selection.
• Modifies scrubbing procedures as needed and communicates with the team.
• Responds to emergencies and follows hospital emergency plans.
• Manages inventory and restocks rooms as directed.
• Assists RN during intraoperative nursing activities.
• Operates complex OR equipment and troubleshoots as needed.
• Mentors Surgical Technician Trainees and serves as a preceptor.
