Carson Tahoe Health in Carson City, NV, seeks a Surgical Technician to join the Operating Room team. Under supervision, you will prepare and care for the surgical patient, set up instruments, and maintain sterile technique throughout procedures.

The role requires Surgical Technician certification or three years’ scrub tech experience, current BLS, and ongoing CE if not certified after 2018. The position is full-time and on-site with variable shift patterns.

Qualifications

  • Surgical technician certification or three years of surgical technician experience.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification for healthcare providers.
  • If uncertified after 2018, complete not less than 15 hours annually of obstetrical technology continuing education.

Responsibilities

  • Proficient in all essential functions of the Surgical Technologist.
  • Assist surgical team before, during and after surgery with instrument and equipment setup and maintenance.
  • Check instruments for cleanliness, sterility, and functionality prior to each case.
  • Arrange and configure equipment in the operating room for ease of use.
  • Assist with setup and use of equipment during procedures and with patient preparation and positioning.
  • Scrub in, gown and glove, and support the surgical team; maintain sterile field throughout surgery.
  • Provide passes and aids to surgeons and assistants; count sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operations.
  • Assist with sterile and non-sterile dressings and surgical room turnover.

Summary

As a part of a surgery team, under the supervision of a Charge RN or Nurse Manager, assists in providing optimal preparation and care of the surgical patient in accordance with patient needs, physician order, CTRH policy and standards of patient care.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Surgical Technician certification required and maintained or has worked continuously as a scrub tech since prior to 1/1/2018.
  • Completion of an accredited surgical technologist training OR three (3) year of surgical technician experience, including successful completion of introductory requirements and competencies, required.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • Hired after (01/01/2018) and not certified, must successfully complete not less than 15 hours annually continuing education concerning the practice of obstetrical technology and must maintain records with Human Resources.
  • Note: A health care facility may employ a person who does not possess the qualifications prescribed by subsection 1 to engage in the practice of surgical technology at the health care facility if, after conducting a thorough and diligent search, the health care facility is unable to employ a sufficient number of surgical technologists who possess such qualifications. A health care facility may continue to employ such a person after the health care facility determines it is able to employ a sufficient number of surgical technologists who possess such qualifications.   • Knowledge of all endoscopic procedures, equipment, and supplies including more complex, high risk, low volume procedures such as ERCP, EUS and wall-stent placement.
  • In addition to cleaning and high-level disinfection/sterilization, monitors sterilizers and disinfecting solutions and maintain accurate records.

Essential Functions

  • Proficient in all essential functions of the “Surgical Technologist”.
  • Assists surgical team before, during and after surgery in a timely, cost-effective manner by providing expert support, assistance and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Checks instruments and equipment for cleanliness, sterility, and functionality prior to the start of each case.
  • Places equipment and supplies in the operating room and arranges instruments according to instructions.
  • Configures equipment for ease of use.
  • Assists with set up and use of equipment during procedures.
  • Assists in patient preparation before and positioning during procedures.
  • Scrubs and dons gown and gloves and assists members of the surgical team in preparing for surgery.
  • Oversees and assures the maintenance of the sterile field throughout the surgery in accordance with aseptic standards and techniques.
  • Passes instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants. Holds retractors and performs other tasks as directed.
  • Counts sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operations.
  • Assist with sterile and non-sterile dressings for patients following surgery.
  • Cleans operating room, washes and sterilizes equipment and assists with room turnover.
  • Supports standards of care though adherence to existing policies and procedures using AORN & ASGE standards as a guideline.
  • Maintains professional competence through formal education, workshops and unit specific requirements.
  • Participates in orienting and training new staff in procedures, policies and unit functioning.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. Proficient in all essential functions of the “Surgical Services RN”.

In addition to Essential Functions for CVOR include the following:

  • Assist with planning and teaching of development programs for both CVOR team members and all Surgical Team Members.
  • Ensure CVOR supplies and equipment are available and functioning properly. Work with corresponding departments as needed. Maintains cleanliness and ordinary care of equipment kept and stored in the heart rooms.
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge and skills to safely operate and troubleshoot specialty equipment used in CVOR.
  • Works with physician to recommend new equipment, supplies and changes in procedures and environment to expedite patient care and service to team members. Based on standards in the market.
  • Assists with patient positioning, skin preparations, and draping.
  • Overall maintenance of aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform effectively and respond appropriately in stressful and emergency situations. Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively to the team when needed (i.e. codes, rapid infusions, etc.).
  • Assist in safe deliverance of patients to CVU.
  • Completion of CVOR and all surgical department annual competency requirements.
  • Communicates to health care professionals and family members appropriately and respectfully.
  • Acts as a role model and treats all team members, including both CVOR and non-CVOR, with respect.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
