Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served, including the ability to obtain, interpret and communicate information in terms of the patient’s needs, a knowledge of growth and development, and an understanding of the range of treatment need by the age groups treated at the facility.
  • The Surgical Technologist is responsible for participating in the nursing process in all aspects of the delivery of patient care and completion of all activities according to established policy, procedure and protocol.
  • Communicates accurate and timely information to the Registered Nurse regarding patient in their care.
  • Records pertinent information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with patients, significant others, and co‑workers.
  • Utilizes appropriate lines of communication.
  • Utilizes appropriate technique intraoperatively by set up of needed items for patient care as well as demonstrating knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
  • Gathering supplies, x‑rays and instruments/equipment for cases.
  • Handles instruments appropriately.
  • Maintains strict sterile technique.
  • Demonstrates ability to circulate under direction of Registered Nurse by:
  • Appraising cleanliness of rooms and proper functioning of equipment.
  • Setting up needed equipment pertinent to patient care.
  • Assisting with anesthesia intraoperatively.
  • Carefully prepping surgical site.
  • Assisting in proper patient positioning.
  • Preparing and labeling specimens correctly.
  • Accompanying patient and anesthesia staff to PACU.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
  • Under direction of Registered Nurse, organizing a plan of care that incorporates physician prescribed treatments, nursing assessments and diagnostic data in a manner that:
  • Is prioritized; is timely; and is integrated with the surgical plan of care.
  • Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, implementing, documenting and evaluating the plan of care in a manner that:
  • Reflects management of identified problems.
  • Reflects observations of patient’s response to treatment.
  • Integrates physician’s orders into the plan.
  • Demonstrates appropriate prioritization.
  • Reflects collaboration with physicians and other members of the team.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate administration of medications and treatments according to policy, procedure and protocol.
  • Re‑evaluates and modifies the plan of care as indicated.

  • Demonstrates effective communication skills and the ability to recognize and intervene in stressful situations involving the patient, significant other and/or team members.
  • Creates and maintains a safe and comfortable environment in which surgery can take place.
Requirements

1 to 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledgeable of Principles of Aseptic Technique.
  • Ability to correlate clinical data with patient’s medical and nursing care.
  • Ability to set priorities.
  • Ability to provide direction to others that is clear, concise and promotes efficiency.
  • Ability to communicate well with patients, families, co‑workers, etc.
Salary Description

$28.00 - $37.00 depending on experience
