Job summary

HUMBLE VASCULAR SURGICAL CENTER INC is seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist to support the operating room team under the supervision of a surgeon, facilitating safe and effective invasive procedures while maintaining a sterile environment and proper equipment function.

You will prepare sterile supplies, scrub in, pass instruments, handle specimens, perform counts with the circulator, drape patients, and assist with room setup and terminal cleaning.

Qualifications

  • Degree from an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
  • BLS certification required upon hire; certification preferred.
  • Eligibility for employment in the U.S. and prior hospital experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Advocate for patients’ rights and provide compassionate, individualized care.
  • Check supplies and equipment and maintain sterile technique.
  • Open sterile supplies and set up sterile table with instruments and meds.
  • Perform pre-procedural Time Out and ensure infection control protocols.
  • Pass instruments to the surgeon and assist with gowning and draping.
  • Prepare and label specimens, maintain accurate intraoperative records.
  • Assist with terminal cleaning and room prep for next case.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and respond to call-ins as needed.

Job description

Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist is an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. Surgical Technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Hours & Pay
  • .9 FTE - 36 hours per week
  • 12 hour shifts - Hours are variable
  • $29.11 - $43.03 per hour depending on experience
Essential Job Functions
  • Advocate for patients’ rights, preferences, and needs, ensuring that they receive high-quality, compassionate care that is tailored to their individual circumstances
  • Project a professional demeanor and appearance while maintaining the confidentiality of the patient, coworkers, and the organization, as appropriate
  • Check supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
  • Open sterile supplies and sets up sterile table with instruments, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure
  • Ensure compliance with Universal Protocol by initiating a pre-procedural 'Time Out' to prevent wrong-site, wrong-procedure, and wrong-patient errors
  • Ensure infection control protocols and safety standards are followed in all aspects of patient care
  • Anticipate additional supplies needed during the procedure
  • Gown and glove surgeon and assistants
  • Hold retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon
  • Sponge or suction operative site
  • Apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders
  • Cut suture material as directed by the surgeon
  • Connect drains to suction apparatus
  • Prepare and apply sterile dressing
  • Help in draping sterile field
  • Pass instruments to surgeon during procedure
  • Operate the retinal laser under the direction of the physician, adhering to all safety protocols and maintaining annual competency through required training
  • Maintain highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
  • Assist in prepping room for the next patient
  • Keep accurate records throughout the procedure and communicates them to circulator
  • Properly label and care for specimens taken during surgery, ensuring correct handling and documentation
  • Perform appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Assist other members of team with terminal cleaning of room
  • Promptly report and document any occurrences of unusual events, safety concerns, or incidents in accordance with organization policies and procedures
  • Participate in the department’s on‑call rotation and respond promptly to call‑ins to ensure continuous patient care and surgical support as needed
  • Use the organization's secure messaging platform in accordance with departmental protocols, including timely receipt and responses to communications

Qualifications
  • Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • Degree from an accredited Surgical Technologist program required
  • Surgical Technologist certification preferred
  • BLS certification is required upon hire
  • Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist in a hospital environment is preferred
  • Must possess a cell phone that interfaces with the organization’s secure message system
