Job summary

Illinois Bone & Joint Institute is seeking a Surgical Technologist for a part-time role in Bourbonnais. The position supports patient care activities in the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities include aseptic technique, equipment setup, specimen handling, and assisting with anesthesia and patient positioning. 1–2 years of related experience or training is preferred; OR experience is a plus.

Qualifications

  • 1 to 2 years related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledgeable of principles of aseptic technique.
  • Ability to correlate clinical data with patient’s medical and nursing care.
  • Ability to set priorities.
  • Ability to provide clear, concise direction to others that promotes efficiency.
  • Ability to communicate well with patients, families, co‑workers, and others.
  • Preferred: OR and orthopedic experience, scrub experience.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients, including obtaining, interpreting, and communicating information about patient needs.
  • Participates in the nursing process in all aspects of patient care and completes all activities according to established policy, procedure, and protocol.
  • Communicates accurate and timely information to the Registered Nurse regarding patients in their care.
  • Records pertinent information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with patients, significant others, and co‑workers.
  • Utilizes appropriate communication lines and sets up needed items for patient care with knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
  • Gathers supplies, x‑rays, and instruments/equipment for cases; handles instruments appropriately; maintains strict sterile technique; circulates under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
  • Preps and labels specimens correctly, assists with anesthesia intraoperatively, assists in proper patient positioning, and accompanies patient and anesthesia staff to the PACU.
  • Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, organizes, documents, and evaluates the plan of care; prioritizes and integrates physician orders; re‑evaluates and modifies the plan as indicated.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate administration of medications and treatments per policy, procedure, and protocol.

Overview

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the provision of patient care activities, related non‑professional services necessary for patient care, and the maintenance of the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The duties listed below describe the general nature and level of work performed. They are not a complete list of all job duties.

Work Schedule

Part‑time, 2 days per week, 8 to 10 hour shifts.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients, including obtaining, interpreting, and communicating information about patient needs.

Clinical Leadership
  • Accepts responsibility for nursing activities related to patient care within the operating room.
  • Demonstrates appropriate judgment and decision‑making skills.
  • Serves as a preceptor and orients new members of the surgical team.
  • Acts as the patient’s advocate in meeting his or her physical and psychological needs.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills and intervenes in stressful situations involving patients, significant others, and team members.
  • Creates and maintains a safe and comfortable environment for surgery.
Requirements

Salary

$25.00 – $35.00 per hour depending on experience.
