Job summary

  • Must have 2 years of ortho scrub experience.
  • 1-2 years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledgeable of principles of aseptic technique.
  • Ability to correlate clinical data with the patient’s medical and nursing care.
  • Ability to set priorities and provide clear direction to others.
  • Ability to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains strict sterile technique.
  • Gathers supplies, x-rays and instruments for cases.
  • Circulates under direction of RN and assists with anesthesia intraoperatively.
  • Preps the surgical site and assists with proper patient positioning.
  • Assists with labeling specimens and post‑operative patient transfer to PACU.

Overview

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the provision of patient care activities, related non‑professional services necessary for patient care and the maintenance of the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The duties listed below describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees in this position and are not an exclusive list of all job duties performed in this position.

Clinical Practice
  • Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served, including the ability to obtain, interpret and communicate information in terms of the patient’s needs, a knowledge of growth and development, and an understanding of the range of treatment need by the age groups treated at the facility.
  • The Surgical Technologist participates in the nursing process in all aspects of the delivery of patient care and completion of all activities according to established policy, procedure and protocol.
  • Communicates accurate and timely information to the Registered Nurse regarding patient in their care.
  • Records pertinent information clearly, accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with patients, significant others, and co‑workers.
  • Utilizes appropriate lines of communication.
  • Utilizes appropriate technique intraoperatively by setting up needed items for patient care and demonstrating knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
  • Gathers supplies, x‑rays and instruments/equipment for cases.
  • Handles instruments appropriately.
  • Maintains strict sterile technique.
  • Circulates under direction of Registered Nurse by appraising the cleanliness of rooms and proper functioning of equipment, setting up needed equipment pertinent to patient care, assisting with anesthesia intraoperatively, carefully prepping the surgical site, assisting with proper patient positioning, preparing and labeling specimens correctly, accompanying patient and anesthesia staff to PACU, and demonstrating knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
  • Under direction of Registered Nurse, organizes a plan of care that incorporates physician‑prescribed treatments, nursing assessments and diagnostic data in a manner that is prioritized, timely and integrated with the surgical plan of care.
  • Under direction of Registered Nurse, implements, documents and evaluates the plan of care in a manner that reflects management of identified problems, reflects observations of patient’s response to treatment, integrates physician’s orders into the plan, demonstrates appropriate prioritization, and reflects collaboration with physicians and other members of the team.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate administration of medications and treatments according to policy, procedure and protocol.
  • Re‑evaluates and modifies the plan of care as indicated.
Clinical Leadership
  • Accepts responsibility for nursing activities related to the care of the patient within the operating room.
  • Demonstrates appropriate judgment and decision‑making skills.
  • Serves as a preceptor and orients new members of the surgical team.
  • Acts as the patient’s advocate in meeting his/her physical and psychological needs.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills and the ability to recognize and intervene in stressful situations involving the patient, significant other and/or team members.
  • Creates and maintains a safe and comfortable environment in which surgery can take place.
Requirements

Salary

$28.00 - $37.00 depending on experience
